Beyond the frame

Pei brings a rich tapestry of cultural and historical influences from her Chinese heritage to her creativity. Her storytelling has consistently been characterized by a deep emotional resonance, rooted in visual narratives that not only engage but also leave a lasting impact on the audience. Her unique artistry and ability to produce high-value storytelling, with many of her projects garnering over 370 million views globally.

The number of views her work receives is a testament to her talent in creating shorter-format content. In a field saturated with purposefully viral gimmicky videos, engaging with authentic, quality-driven content is a challenge. For Muyan, this remains the most difficult thing to overcome every day. “At the heart of every successful project, I believe, is a deep respect for the audience, for the story, and every single person involved in the production process. I never approach a series purely with numbers in mind. For me, the best results come when creativity and data work together.,” she emphasized, underlining her commitment to respecting the audience and the story above all.

Among her favorite works so far for ReelShort, the top of this list sits Don’t Miss Me When I’m Gone. Navigating the complex emotions of love, grief, and healing, her approach was to make these themes somehow universal. Despite it being a high school drama, she understood that emotions are felt by people of all ages and all walks of life. She worked towards making it enjoyable for everyone, and it worked! For her, managing everything within a vertical frame posed a significant challenge. She had to learn, unlearn, and relearn shot selections that worked and didn’t work for the vertical format, angles that would best showcase the emotions, environment setting, and overall look of the scene. This was what she had a great time learning, despite it being the most strenuous part of production. She could also share specific examples of shots that worked and didn’t work, and how she overcame these challenges.

Unlock hidden visions

While the professional front of Don’t Miss Me When I’m Gone was quite an experience for Muyan, she also found great joy in engaging with the younger cast. Communicating emotionally sensitive topics with adults of different generations, understanding their viewpoints, coping mechanisms, and how to project their behavior was a new and exciting territory for her to explore. This experience made her feel connected and involved, and she enjoyed every moment of it.

The popular booster shot for her came with the project The Alpha King and His Virgin Bride. A fantasy romcom, something many don’t risk experimenting with, was a hit among the audiences. Muyan’s impressive work in amalgamating vulnerability, longing, and emotional truth stood out, and the execution was immaculate. A love story that was both heart-warming and heartbreaking to watch, the flow of emotions was very natural. About the success of the project, she happily shared: “What made it stand out was our decision to focus on romance above all else—we didn’t dilute it with too much exposition or world-building. Instead, we made space for yearning looks, vulnerable silences, and deeply emotional dialogue.”

In addition to her on-set leadership, Muyan adeptly utilizes social media as an extension of her storytelling. By sharing behind-the-scenes content, teasers, and engaging directly with fans, she cultivates emotional investment before a series’ premiere. This proactive approach amplifies visibility while deepening the viewer’s connection to the narrative.

As Muyan Pei continues to redefine the parameters of short-form content, her commitment to authentic storytelling and collaborative creativity positions her as a leader in the next generation of digital media production. Her work not only resonates with audiences but also sets a new standard for quality and engagement in the ever-evolving realm of entertainment.
