Zixuan Zhang, known professionally as Andrea, is a dynamic force in the world of filmmaking. A graduate of UC Santa Barbara’s prestigious film program, Andrea has not only produced award-winning short films but also co-founded Artistic Zone Inc., a platform dedicated to delivering a variety of art-related projects and services. With a passion for storytelling and an interdisciplinary approach to art, Andrea is making waves in the industry.
“Movies were my company growing up,” Andrea reflects, sharing how her love for filmmaking was born. “As an only child with parents who worked late, films became my entertainment and my companion.” Her journey into film production began with a deeply personal connection to the medium, and this passion continues to fuel her career.
Lessons from UCSB
Andrea’s academic foundation at UC Santa Barbara played a pivotal role in shaping her approach to producing films. “We have a production course at UCSB called 106 Production, where we spent six months producing a short film,” she recalls. Andrea had the rare opportunity to take this class for three consecutive years under the mentorship of Wendy Eley Jackson, a seasoned producer actively working in the industry. “Being her student for three years taught me invaluable lessons about the intricacies of producing.”
Keys to a Successful Short Film
Having produced multiple award-winning short films, Andrea shares her insights on crafting compelling stories within the constraints of time. “Length is crucial for short films. You need to tell a story in very few minutes and ensure it’s both complete and concise.” This balance between brevity and depth has become a hallmark of her work.
Obscura: A Forensic Thriller
One of Andrea’s latest projects, Obscura, is currently making its mark on the festival circuit. The film follows a forensic photographer with stage-four lung cancer hunting a serial killer across three seasons while confronting his own mortality. “True crime is a popular genre, but telling it from a forensic photographer’s perspective is fresh and intriguing,” Andrea explains. She sees immense potential for the project to resonate with thriller enthusiasts.
Looking ahead, Andrea hopes Obscura will gain traction at major festivals in 2025, drawing interest from investors. “We already have the script for the feature version ready. It’s just a matter of getting the right attention,” she shares enthusiastically.
Memory of You: A Personal Milestone
Andrea’s producing debut, Memory of You, has garnered critical acclaim at multiple festivals. “This project holds a special place in my heart,” she says. “Seeing it succeed gave me the confidence to pursue producing full-time.” Andrea’s collaboration with director Isabella was particularly meaningful, and the duo hopes to work together again in the future.
Artistic Zone Inc: A Fusion of Art Forms
As co-founder of Artistic Zone Inc., Andrea’s vision extends beyond film. The platform collaborates with artists across disciplines to create innovative projects. “Film combines various art forms—costume design, interior design, fine art—all within a single frame,” she notes. This philosophy inspired Andrea to bring together artistic talents from diverse fields.
One of Artistic Zone Inc.’s upcoming initiatives focuses on advocating for pet-friendly housing—a cause close to Andrea’s heart as a dog owner. “This project is both personal and meaningful,” she shares.

Andrea’s creative process emphasizes innovation and teamwork. “I’m always looking for scripts that feel fresh,” she explains. She believes in fostering strong team dynamics through open communication and team-building activities. “When people know each other well, they’re more likely to voice their creative ideas,” she adds.

As a former programmer for the DaVinci International Film Festival, Andrea has a keen eye for industry trends. “AI-generated films are a hot topic right now,” she observes. Many festivals are setting guidelines for AI submissions or hosting panels to discuss their implications.
Breaking Barriers as a Female Producer
Andrea acknowledges the challenges of being a female producer in a male-dominated industry. “It’s hard to be respected. Sometimes, people leave me out of important conversations or try to dismiss me,” she shares candidly. Her advice to aspiring female producers is straightforward: “Be firm and set your boundaries from the start.”
A Vision for Multimedia Art
Andrea sees immense potential in multimedia art for storytelling. “I once saw a film projected onto a painting, which transformed both mediums. It’s a glimpse of where the future could go,” she says. Her dream project involves creating a documentary that showcases the interconnectedness of various art forms, from fine art to culinary creations.
Andrea draws inspiration from legendary filmmaker Agnes Varda. “Her work always offers a fresh perspective and inspires me to push boundaries,” she says.
Looking ahead, Andrea is excited to expand her artistic horizons, blending her skills in fashion design, ceramics, and fine arts with her film projects. “Expressing the same idea through different mediums creates fascinating results,” she explains.
