The holiday season can be good for the soul, but tough on gamers’ pockets. If you’re nursing your bank account back into health after buying expensive gifts for your loved ones, we feel you. To help with your gaming drought, we’ve rounded up the best games on Steam that don’t require a dime to play.

Paladins

Hi-Rez Studios’ Paladins is a character-based online shooter that’s eerily similar to Overwatch – but we won’t get into the messy chicken-and-egg debate. Paladins features a range of champions to choose from, and a unique card-based system lets you tweak your Champions’ load-outs augmenting your champion to help you wreak havoc in the arena.

Dota 2

Despite its exclusivity to the Steam platform, Dota 2 is easily one of the most popular online multiplayer battle arena games right now. In classic MOBA style, the game pits two teams of five members against each other with the intention to destroy the opposing team’s Ancient, a building situated at the heart of each side’s base, and defending their own.

All the characters are unlocked right from the start so, unless you want some new skins for your characters, you can have a blast without spending a dime.

War Thunder

War Thunder is hands-down the best vehicular combat action game on Steam for free. The arcade-style gameplay combined with breathtaking visuals & intense battles is enough to keep you hooked for hours on end. War Thunder combines the three arms – air, land, and sea – on the same battlefield. If you’re looking for some highly detailed war-gaming, War Thunder will surely satiate your hunger.

Brawlhalla

If you like playing Super Smash Bros., you’ll fall in love with Blue Mammoth Games’s free-to-play platform-based fighting game Brawlhalla, too.

Brawlhalla allows you to pick a character from its roster and fight up to three opponents on floating stages with the goal of knocking them off the platform to score points. Though the characters provided are not as iconic as the one on Nintendo’s beloved fighting game, the similar streamlined gameplay can help fill the gaming void in your life between Smash Bros. installments.

Smite

Smite is a third-person multiplayer battler focused on brawls between gods & mythological figures. Its third-person perspective adds a dynamic layer to the game by putting you into the thick of the action.

Smite provides you with a roster of more than a hundred mythological characters with unique skills & weapons to help you triumph over the opposition in 5v5 matches.

Warframe

Digital Extremes’s free-to-play co-op shooter Warframe is one of the most enjoyable games out there. Set in the future, the players game puts you in control of members of the Tenno, a race of ancient warriors who have awoken from a century-long cryosleep. The premise of the game is quite simple: you play a weird space ninja who needs to become an unstoppable killing machine in order to survive.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links is a free digital collectible card game developed by Konami that takes you into the barebones nostalgic universe of Yu-Gi-Oh! The game allows you to duel it out in fast-paced card battles. New updates are furnished regularly, which adds new decks and alters the game’s balance.
