‘Astrolatry’ film earns best lead performance win for Corbett

Astrolatry captured Best Midnight Feature at the 2026 Nightmares Film Festival while Ethan Daniel Corbett won Best Lead Performance for his starring turn. Writer-director David Gordon received a Best Director in a Feature nomination. Dread Central described the central performance by lead Ethan Daniel Corbett as impressive as it is off-putting and compared the film to a Frank Henenlotter version of Maniac.

The film opened with a sold-out world premiere at the 59th Sitges Film Festival in Spain. It followed with a sold-out American premiere at Nightmares Film Festival, an Italian premiere at Monsters Fantastic Film Festival, and a sold-out private screening in Los Angeles.

In the story Corbett plays Elliot, an obsessive outcast whose fixation on a beauty cream model descends into violent delusion after an alien meteor crash-lands. The narrative blends psychological horror, dark satire, and practical effects to examine alienation, desire, objectification, and toxic masculinity through the nice-guy trope. David Gordon made his feature directorial debut, handling writing, directing, photography, and editing alongside producer Cole Paxton.

Corbett studied acting at California State University, Fullerton. He previously earned Best Supporting Actor at FilmQuest 2024 for FACES and has appeared in OUTtv's Laid Bare and Clown & Out.

Corbett recently launched the vertical western romance West of My Heart through Upright Pictures, the company he co-founded with Emma Reinagel. He serves as executive producer and performer in the psychological horror feature Regression directed by Melissa Vitello. Upcoming projects include Death & Life, a fantasy romance-comedy in which he stars as Death and also produces; the film was shot over nine months across California. He will next play corrupt priest Father Dom in St. Nicholas. Corbett wrote, will produce, and star in California Native, a 2006-set Southern California coming-of-age story directed by Sabrina Lassegue, and is developing the feature Eveningstar.

Dread Central observed that Astrolatry delivers the midnight-movie goods and features heaps of goo, loads of masturbation, and a central performance by lead Ethan Daniel Corbett that is as impressive as it is off-putting. The review noted the film answers the question of what a Frank Henenlotter-directed Maniac might resemble.

Letterboxd users echoed the reception. ElDiabloTejano called the film absolutely bonkers in the best possible way and praised its exploration of toxic masculinity with an alien twist. Stephen Michaels labeled it a pure fever dream and highlighted the performance and craft. Maxgabel described it as wild and predicted breakout indie success. Additional viewers noted the mix of pathetic yet menacing qualities in the lead performance and the film's condemnation of toxic objectifying behavior.

Further Letterboxd commentary emphasized the film's uncomfortable themes of dependence, hyper-toxic manosphere attitudes, and objectification of women alongside its splatter elements. Reviewers described the work as disgusting yet tonally varied, funny and unsettling, with reality and the protagonist's altered point of view merging. One viewer summarized the experience as pajas cósmicas while others appreciated the goopy practical effects and emotional hints beneath the gross-out sequences.
