David Parker Ray: Unearth the true terror of the Toy Box Killer
Serial killers – they’re not the part of society we want to think too much about. We surely don’t want to ever come across them unless they’re on a television or phone screen and we know that we’re safe from them. And fortunately, it’ll stay that way for the vast majority of us. Of course, they don’t deserve our praise and the kind of attention they’re sometimes given but let’s face it: they’re fascinating!
Serial killers can be some of the most interesting people on the planet, especially when you consider the word “sonder”. It is the realization that each and every one of us come with a vivid & complex story, including our murderous counterparts. What makes people do some of the most horrific crimes of all time? It seems like a million-dollar question, but another thing adding to the complexities of crime are the names.
When a serial killer is given a name, it can feel like we’re in a novel or film. Perhaps, you’ve wondered at some point if serial killers ever wondered what names they’ll be called. What also captivates us is the fact that names tell just a fragment of killers’ stories.
When we hear the “toybox killer”, maybe we think of a child killer like Freddy Kruger. Perchance a man who merely puts his victims in toy chests or chunks of the victims in toy boxes. Which true crime story would you like to read about or stream? For now, let’s focus on the real story of the toybox killer. What was going on with this guy?
David Parker Ray
As we’ve said before – even the most evil people of all time come with a story of their own. Whether it goes down the cliché route of unique circumstances of loving homes and friends. No matter what, the stories always tell us what happened, what made these people become what they’ve known for.
And then, we’ll ask ourselves what that says about society. Or can the things relatives did in the past, (even before we’re born) can really bring an impact on us too? We’ll save those great questions for some other time. Focusing on a much smaller scale, we’re looking at David Parker Ray.
During his childhood years, Ray and his little sister Peggy were raised by their disciplinarian grandfather. Occasionally, they were visited by their violent alcoholic father. He gave Ray magazines showing sadomaochistic pornography. His school life may remind you of the unpopular kids on Disney shows when we were kids since he was bullied by his peers for being shy around girls.
It’s believed his sexual fantasies of raping, torturing, and even murdering women came about when Ray was a teenager. His sister found disturbing drawings & photos. After graduating high school, he joined the U.S. Army, though, was later given an honorable discharge. He was divorced four times with two children, including his accomplice daughter Jesse Ray.
Toybox Killer
David Ray Parker aka the Toybox Killer is believed to have tortured & killed more than fifty women within the boundaries of his soundproof trailer. One March night in 1999, Cynthia Vigil was hooking in a parking lot in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A man pulled up and claimed to be an undercover cop. He told Vigil she was under arrest for solicitation and he put her in the back of his car.
You’ve probably guessed it, but the man was Parker. He chained Cynthia to a gynecologist-table in the middle of his trailer, and raped and tortured the woman for three days. His girlfriend Cindy Hendy helped him.
They used medical devices, whips, electric shock and sexual toys to torturer Vigil. She was to refer to him only as “master”. And his routine hardly changed.
He presumably killed his victims using the whips, changes, straps, pulleys, clamps, leg spreader bars, surgical blades, electric shock machines and saws. Sometimes, he put his victims in wooden contraptions that bent them over and immobilized them so dogs (yes, the furry ones) and other friends could rape them.
He’s believed to have done this to many women for years while residing in New Mexico.
Arrest
After three days, Cynthia escaped from the toybox killer prison. She waited until Ray had gone to work, and then unlocked her chains. Ray’s partner Cindy had left the keys on the table before going into another room to talk on the phone. But Cindy caught Cynthia trying to escape and a fight broke out. During the struggle, Cindy broke a lamp on Cynthia’s head but Cynthia managed to unlock her chains.
She stabbed Cindy in the neck with an icepick. She ran down the road wearing only an iron slave collar and padlocked chains. She ran down the road until police found her. The toy box killer was sentenced to two-hundred and twenty four years of imprisonment. But he passed away at the Lea County Correctional Facility in Hobbs, New Mexico.
