Emma Watson retires from acting: Revisiting her best movies
Emma Watson has been a staple in many of our childhoods since her pivotal role in the Harry Potter franchise. It looks like the actress is retiring from life on the screen to enjoy life with her fiancé.
Could Emma Watson be retiring after twenty-one years as an actress? Honor her career and revisit her most iconic roles.
Wingardium Leviosa
At the age of thirty, it looks like Emma Watson is giving up the glitz & glam of Hollywood for a quieter life. Fiancé Leo Robinton & Watson have been relaxing in Ibiza before taking residence in Los Angeles. But even the Hollywood sign isn’t enough to keep her on the screen.
Some people were born for the roles they play and that was the case for Emma Watson’s breakthrough role in the Harry Potter movies as Hermione Granger. After rising through the ranks and beating 4,000 other applicants, Watson got a starring role on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 2001.
Of course, we know Emma Watson continues her role as Miss Granger for the rest of the films in the franchise, but she also had doubts about continuing based on other interests including her education. After the 2007 release of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, & Emma Watson had their hands, feet, & wands cast in cement on Hollywood Boulevard.
The franchise threw Watson into the limelight and her career skyrocketed. She appeared in a BBC film based on the 1936 novel Ballet Shoes in 2007 (her first role that wasn’t Hermione Granger). When Half Blood Prince was released, Burberry stepped up and made Watson the face of the brand as she modeled alongside her brother in numerous ads.
After all the Harry Potter films were released it wasn’t long before she was back in magazines. Emma Watson appeared on the cover of Vogue in 2011. Watson also became an activist and launched a feminist book club called Our Shared Shelf, which aims to raise awareness for gender inequality by discussing articles & books on the subject.
She also began exploring other acting roles after her Hermione Granger days were over. Let’s take a look at some of her iconic roles over the years.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
An iconic movie every person coming of age has probably watched is The Perks of Being a Wallflower. It not only impacted young teens, but it also gave Emma Watson another pivotal role she was known for in her acting career.
The film follows a young Charlie (Logan Lerman) as he struggles with finding his identity and finds two seniors who take him under their wing. Sam (Emma Watson) & Patrick (Ezra Miller) share the highs & lows Charlie deals with as he comes to terms with a terrible past.
If you haven’t watched this film already then you’re missing out.
The Bling Ring
What’s better than a movie based on true events? Absolutely nothing. Emma Watson stars in this Sofia Coppola movie alongside Taissa Farmiga & Katie Chang. The Bling Ring tells the tale of a group of high-school students begins breaking into the homes of major celebrities to rob them of millions of dollars in clothes, shoes, & jewelry.
This definitely makes a change from the movies & roles Emma Watson is known for. Luckily for us, she kills it and the true story behind the film makes it that much better.
Beauty and the Beast
This Disney remake has definitely had mixed reviews since its release. However, it’s definitely one of Emma Watson’s more recognized roles in her acting career. The 2017 movie retells the tale as old as time. Belle (Emma Watson) attempts to save her father and in doing so sacrifices her free will. The beast in the castle isn’t what he appears and magic is revealed.
We’re a sucker for Disney, but this film is nowhere near as gorgeous as the original. However, if you want to hear a decent soundtrack (Evermore) and see your beloved Disney classic as a live-action then this is worth the watch. Plus, Emma attempts a musical so that’s interesting.
This is the End
Even though Emma Watson’s role in this comedy was only a cameo it’s definitely worth a brief mention. Exploring her comedic timing, Emma plays herself as Hollywood is overcome by the apocalypse. We gotta say that this may be one of our favorite performances by her.
The Circle
Starring alongside Tom Hanks, Emma Watson plays the role of Mae. She’s ecstatic to be employed in the biggest tech company in the world. But after Mae gets involved in an experiment that could change the world, she realizes the consequences. This thriller didn’t get a lot of recognition but we definitely enjoyed seeing her in this type of movie.
Little Women
The 2019 adaptation of Little Women is considered to be one of Emma Watson’s best performances of late. Before the retiring rumors began circling, we still weren’t over this tearjerker after its release.
While the March sisters enter the threshold of womanhood, they go through many ups & downs in life and endeavor to make important decisions that can affect their future. Watson plays the role of Meg and we were enthralled from start to finish. Definitely, a must-watch if you love period dramas.
