Disobedient women: All the rad women of comedy with shows out or returning this year
Women are on the rise – did you know they actually make up the majority of the population on planet Earth? And some of them are really, really funny. In a roundtable interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Amy Sherman-Palladino stated how she thinks “comedy is heading to a very dangerous place” due to the current outrage culture surrounding comedy where you “can’t allow someone to have an apolitical position.”
For better or worse (looking at you Roseanne Barr), women are doing some of the most dangerous comedy on TV right now. Looking to keep up with the bad girls of comedy? Here are all the new shows coming out or old shows returning in the next twelve months featuring the funniest women in the industry.
Tiffany Haddish: The Last O.G.
After appearing on Time’s annual 100 most influential people in the world list, the sky’s the limit for Tiffany Haddish. She’s currently starring alongside Tracy Morgan in The Last O.G. (Cop Out) and later this year she’ll also be reuniting with Girls Trip director Malcolm D. Lee in a film with Kevin Hart (Ride Along). She’s also signed a first-look deal with HBO and she’s already planning for next year where she’ll be voicing Queen Whatever Wa-Nabi in The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.
Issa Rae: Insecure
That’s right, ladies and gentlemen! S3 of Rae’s critically-acclaimed comedy returns to HBO on August 12 for more sharp, savvy takes on how two young black women (Rae and Yvonne Orji) navigate different worlds and difficult experiences. We’re beyond ready to see it.
Amy Poehler: Making It
Honestly, we’re not too sure what to make of Poehler’s new craft related competition show even though it does reunite her with her beloved Parks and Recreation co-star Nick Offerman (Fargo). Still, the two have some serious comedy chemistry and hopefully Poehler does one of those impromptu freestyle raps she does so well in the middle of it all. Either way, we’re she’ll be hilarious however bad the show may turn out to be when it premieres on NBC on July 1.
Sarah Silverman: I Love You, America
The second season of the acerbic standup’s political travelogue I Love You, America will debut on Hulu on September 6. As usual, we can all expect to see Silverman finding common ground with people who harbor seemingly opposite views on near enough everything. And as the show will be airing close to the midterm elections, we can probably anticipate it’ll be even more political than usual.
Abbi Jacobson & Ilana Glazer: Broad City
Hold your Bingo Bronson tight to your bosom because the fifth and final season of the beloved feminist comedy is due to premiere at some point at the start of 2019 and it’s gonna be real emosh. We’ll spark up a phat one in tribute to you, ladies!
Cameron Esposito: Rape Jokes
Since her podcast Take My Wife was picked up by iTunes after Seeso went under earlier this year, things are continuing to look good for Cameron Esposito. Jay Leno called her “the future of comedy”. Sorry to say this Jay, but you’re wrong – she’s the now of comedy! You can also check out her special Rape Jokes – which came out earlier this month – for free on her website, or you can pay to download it and all the proceeds go to RAINN, the United States’s largest anti-sexual violence organization. Right on!
