Light the nightmare lantern: What to know about ‘Hollow Knight: Silksong’
It’s been three years since the release of Team Cherry’s Hollow Knight. This Metroidvania video game has seduced players around the globe completely in love with the game’s aesthetic & lore.
After the huge success of Hollow Knight, it was only a matter of time before we got to see another Hollow Knight game – and, boy, has it been a long time. Team Cherry originally announced Hollow Knight: Silksong in February 2019, and fans are still waiting to find out the release date of the long-awaited game.
The wait is finally over! Or at least the wait for new information. Here’s everything we know so far about Hollow Knight: Silksong – and no, Hornet is definitely not void.
Edge’s cover
As a Christmas present for Hollow Knight fans, Jen Simpkins announced on December 24th that Edge (and no, we’re not talking about Kingdom’s Edge) will include a big feature on Hollow Knight: Silksong. The announcement came with the release of the magazine’s cover, which features Hornet holding her nail over a field of delicate flowers.
The magazine was scheduled to be released on December 31st and, although it was only one week difference between the announcement of the feature and the magazine’s release, it was more than enough time for fans to speculate about what it would be about.
Obviously, some fans expected to get a release date for Hollow Knight: Silksong finally. Others, however, didn’t want to get their hopes up; Team Cherry has been announcing the game for almost two years now.
What we know about Hollow Knight: Silksong
Edge’s 354th issue was finally released and, unfortunately, we still don’t know when Hollow Knight: Silksong is going to be released. Luckily, we did get new information about the game, as Edge’s team got to watch a demo of the game. So envious!
Now that the new main character is Hornet instead of the Knight, we’re gonna have to get used to a change of speed; Hornet will be able to travel faster and will be more acrobatic in general. This shouldn’t come as a shock, as we’ve seen Hornet’s behavior in the two fights against her in Hollow Knight.
Because Hornet’s gameplay is different from the Knight’s, Hollow Knight: Silksong will start off teaching us how to navigate around with Hornet. Additionally, we’re going to see major changes in the scenery, which needs to accommodate Hornet’s height. We can also expect boss fights to be different (and probably harder) to keep up with Hornet’s fighting style.
Hollow Knight: Silksong will be targeted to the general market, even if they haven’t played its predecessor. However, Hollow Knight fans might recognize some differences from the previous iteration: for instance, Hornet will not be equipped with three masks from the get-go, but there are also enemies with two-hit damage.
Hornet is able to craft new weapons with her own tools and, if that’s not enough to get you hot & bothered about Hollow Knight: Silksong, Hornet will be speaking in this new game.
Hollow Knight: Silksong: prequel or sequel?
Unfortunately, we still don’t have a definitive answer to this question. If you’ve seen mossbag’s YouTube channel, you might be aware there are several endings – with lore to accompany them. Additionally, Team Cherry has stated that each & every one of these endings is as legit as the other, making Hornet’s new adventure difficult to place logically for storytelling.
If Hollow Knight: Silksong is intended to be a sequel to the first game, we’ll start the story off so that both “Siblings” end when Hornet is trapped with the Knight in the Black Egg to contain the infection – and every other end in which Hornet is free makes sense. Tricky, huh?
So far, fans are leaning more to thinking Hollow Knight: Silksong will be a prequel to Hollow Knight. However, Team Cherry has referred to the game as a sequel – which is why fans are still entertaining the idea of Hornet’s new adventure happening after the events of Hollow Knight.

Even though we didn’t get a release date, we know Hollow Knight: Silksong will be available on PC & Switch before it’s released on other platforms. At least we can add Hollow Knight: Silksong to our wishlist on Steam, so we can get it as soon as it’s on the market.
