Speculation station: 2018’s most anticipated sci-fi movies
The year 2018 CE has been a fruitful one in the realm of science fiction film so far. Films like Annihilation, I Kill Giants and A Quiet Place have already set a good pace for the genre. As the calendar rolls on we look at the rest of the year's sci-fi menu to get an idea of what you might want to eat. Genetically engineered dinosaurs, Millennium Falcons and man-hunting aliens are just over the horizon, so, strap on your tin foil hats and get ready to jump to lightspeed.
Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom
Release date: June 22, 2018
Chris Pratt (Avengers: Infinity War), a.k.a. your friendly neighborhood Star-Lord and raptor trainer, returns to dino island this time not to save Bryce Dallas Howard (The Help), but the dinos themselves. It’s hard to beat a good popcorn stuffer like Jurassic Park in the heat of summer. Dashing rogues, dinos and volcanic activity – what’s not to love? Also, the man, the myth, the legend, Jeff Goldblum (The Grand Budapest Hotel), will be reprising his role as Dr. Ian Malcolm. In the words of His Royal Highness Booker T, “Can you dig it, sucka?!”
The Predator
Release date: September 14, 2018
Being included as the fourth installment of the Predator franchise, The Predator looks to clean house and get things going again. Disregarding the AVP films, The Predator is falling into canon somewhere between 1990s Predator 2 and 2010s Predators. With Olivia Munn (X-Men: Apocalypse) and Boyd Holbrook (Logan) taking the leading roles, and Shane Black of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005), Iron Man 3 (2013), and The Nice Guys (2016) falling into the director’s chair, we might have something interesting on our hands. Oh, and this time the alien trophy hunters have genetically modified themselves to kick even more ass. Oh boy! There they go killing again!
Mortal Engines
Release date: December 14, 2018
Adapted from Philip Reeve’s YA novel of the same name, Mortal Engines has got to be one of the more interesting concepts to be given the silver screen treatment. Set a few thousand years into the future of a cataclysmically scorched and ruined Earth, the roaming masses of man-made cities on wheels scour the planet in search of smaller towns to consume. With storyboard artist turned director Christian Rivers making his big screen directorial debut, we don’t really know what to expect. He’s an alumnus of the Peter Jackson school of Tolkien, if that means anything to you. Also, ol’ Petey just so happens to have co-writer credit for the film, so, it might be hit or miss.
