BTS’s BBMA performance: The ‘Map of the Soul’ tour reference you missed
When BTS took the stage at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards, they made it clear how much they miss their ARMY. The performance of “Dynamite” also carried a quiet nod to the Map of the Soul tour they could not yet stage.
BTS appeared in red flight attendant-style outfits against a giant departures board that listed cities such as LA, Seoul, London, and New Jersey. Fans recognized the cities immediately as stops from the postponed arena tour.
Departures = postponed tour dates
The departures board listed the exact sequence of cities BTS had planned to visit on the Map of the Soul tour. The tour never reached those venues and was officially cancelled in August 2021 because of continued COVID uncertainties. Refunds were issued to ticket holders, closing the chapter on the original routing.
Airplanes mean a lot of things
The performance was filmed inside an unoccupied hangar at Incheon International Airport, with simulated planes taking off overhead. The setting reinforced the travel theme that runs through Map of the Soul: 7 – The Journey, the 2020 Japanese album that centers on searching for answers during life’s journey. The same motif appears in the “Dynamite” video, where planes pass above the group, and it has shown up in earlier BTS shows as a symbol of forward motion.
The tour's ultimate fate
After the 2020 postponement, BTS monitored health guidelines and touring conditions through the first half of 2021. On August 19 the agency confirmed the entire Map of the Soul tour would not take place. The decision ended months of uncertainty for fans who had held tickets for the originally scheduled arena dates.
Military service and full group return
With touring on hold, the members began their mandatory military service in stages. All seven completed their terms by June 2025. The discharges allowed the group to resume joint activities and begin planning a new stadium run that would mark their first full-scale live shows since 2019.
2026 ARIRANG world tour announcement
In 2025 BTS revealed the BTS WORLD TOUR ‘ARIRANG,’ scheduled for 2026-2027. The itinerary lists 79 shows across 34 cities and regions, including first-time appearances at Gillette Stadium and Allegiant Stadium. The tour returns the group to the large venues they once targeted for the Map of the Soul dates.
Legacy of the Map of the Soul era
The Map of the Soul period produced the Persona and Map of the Soul: 7 albums and the October 2020 Map of the Soul ON:E online concert, which reached nearly one million viewers. Although the live tour was cancelled, the creative themes and fan connection established during that stretch carried forward into the group’s later projects and eventual return to the road.
Ruling the night
At the 2020 BBMAs, BTS won Top Social Artist for the fourth consecutive year while losing Top Duo/Group to the Jonas Brothers. Their “Dynamite” performance still dominated social conversation that evening, underscoring how the group’s reach continued to grow even without a current tour on the calendar.
