‘The Umbrella Academy’ season 2 trailer: All the fan theories
Can July 31st come soon enough? With so many of our favorite shows delayed due to COVID-19, a bright spot in our TV-watching still remains. The Umbrella Academy season 2 is coming to Netflix at the end of this month.
The Umbrella Academy follows seven superhuman siblings who were born out of nowhere on October 1st, 1989. Twelve babies (in the comics, it’s forty-three) were born without their mothers being pregnant before that day. Sir Reginald Hargreeves adopts seven and trains them to fight crime.
Based on the Dark Horse Comic by My Chemical Romance front-man Gerard Way, The Umbrella Academy follows Luther (Tom Hopper), Diego (David Castenada), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Alison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Five (Aidan Gallagher), and Vanya (Ellen Page) after their crime fighting days as they try to heal from their troubled past.
On July 8th, the trailer for The Umbrella Academy season 2 dropped, filling us with easter eggs and theories for what to expect later this month. Here’s what we know so far and what we think will happen.
Stuck in the 1960s
Season one left the seven trying to save the world from doom, leaving the series on a cliffhanger as Five jumps everyone back in time just before the moon crashes into earth. The Umbrella Academy season 2 thrusts the siblings into the 1960s, around the time John F. Kennedy was assassinated.
The Umbrella Academy season 2 trailer shows the seven are separated but stuck at the same time. Klaus is in a hippie commune, Five is in a nuclear wasteland, Alison looks like she’s appearing in court, Luther’s taken up underground boxing, Diego is in a psych ward, and Vanya is picking up hitchhikers.
The siblings end up reconvening later in season 2 as The Umbrella Academy trailer shows. It’s revealed that all their new lives revolve around JFK’s assassination somehow. Plus, if they don’t do something to change that, the world will end three days after JFK’s assassination day.
Ben is alive?
Ben, Number Six (Justin H. Min), dies before the events of season 1 and only Klaus can speak to him since Klaus’ superpower is talking to the dead. In The Umbrella Academy season 2 trailer, Ben is shown exiting a car in the flesh. Does that mean Ben’s alive in the past?
In another scene in The Umbrella Academy trailer, Klaus tells the room that Ben’s not here because “ghosts can’t time travel.” Ben quickly puts Klaus in his place. In season 2, we’re guessing he’s dead, but becomes alive due to time shenanigans.
What’s up with fish tank head person?
In a bizarre appearance, there’s a character in The Umbrella Academy season 2 trailer that has a fish tank for a head with a tiny goldfish inside. A new head? Well, it’s a head we’ve heard about, but have never seen before.
Turns out, the goldfish head in season 2 is Carmichael, head of Temps Aeternalis, the time police organization Five works for. According to The Umbrella Academy comics, the goldfish is the dastardly head of Five’s division who trained Five to assassinate Kennedy per the comics.
The albino assassins
A milkman with a rifle and creepy vacuum salesman? We see antagonists coming back like Hazel (Cameron Britton) who’s on Five’s side now. To keep things fresh The Umbrella Academy needs new bad guys for season 2. These appear to be new hired guns for Temps Aeternalis since Hazel and ChaCha (Mary J. Blige) change sides.
The shadow of Professor Hargreeves and Pogo
Not only did they see a shadow, the end of The Umbrella Academy season 2 trailer shows the siblings sitting down with their adoptive father and explaining their powers to him. Remember, this is well before October 1989 when Hargreeves learned of the super-babies’ existence. Maybe the seven have to tell him in the past to expect them?
According to the comics, Hargreeves was going to acquire nuclear weapons from Kennedy, causing the apocalypse, which is the reason the Temps Aeternalis wanted JFK dead. Whether The Umbrella Academy season 2 sticks to the comics’ plot remains to be seen.
Will we see plotlines from the comics?
The Umbrella Academy season 2 is based on the second volume of the comics called Dallas. In the comics, there are interesting storylines beyond the JFK plot, including messianic prophecies and mummified kings. These aren’t hinted at too heavily, but if season 2 follows Dallas, we should see some interesting new additions to the story.
The soundtrack
One of our favorite parts of The Umbrella Academy season 1 was the eclectic soundtrack. The trailer for season 2 gives us a new Gerard Way song, Here Comes The End, that sounds a lot like Brown Sugar by The Rolling Stones. Since season 2 is set in the 60s, we can expect more vintage selections from that era.
