When does’Supernatural’ return? and all the theories explained
Last night, December 12th, was The CW’s Supernatural’s mid-season finale. There’s a lot to unpack from the eighth episode of the twenty that make up the final season, as well as theories as to what’s next. Here’s the scoop on what we know and what we’re hoping for as Season 15 continues.
Priorities: when does Supernatural return?
Supernatural will return to The CW with more of season 15 on Thursday, January 16th, 2020.
Then, presumably only to torture us, Supernatural will go on another short hiatus, after the February 13th episode. We’ll have almost a month before seeing Dean (Jensen Ackles), Sam (Jared Padalecki), and Castiel (Misha Collins) again on March 16th, when they move from Thursday nights to Monday night.
As if that wasn’t enough, there looks to be yet another break scheduled for Supernatural episodes. After the April 6th episode, we won’t see new episodes until May 4th. Supernatural’s final episode is scheduled for May 18th, so the last three episodes should air in a row: May 4th, 11th, and then 18th.
Theories and spoilers: everyone’s coming back
Firstly, if you’ve not made it through Supernatural season 15, episode 8, go take care of that and come back. Still here? Let’s spill some tea.
Here is what we are loving about Supernatural season 15: everyone is coming out of the woodwork. We threw a little party when Lilith (Anna Grace Barlow) re-emerged in episode 5. Not to mention both the Woman in White (Shanae Tomasevich) and Blood Mary (Jovanna Burke) showing up in the premiere.
As Dean so aptly mentioned, it’s a “greatest hits” of our favorites from the past. After Eileen’s (Shoshannah Stern) return in episode 6, we would have felt cheated if we didn’t get to see Michael (Jake Abel) again. Supernatural didn’t disappoint last night, and his appearance couldn’t have been more perfect.
There’s some buzz around this season of Supernatural becoming an all-out greatest villains vs greatest allies battle, and it definitely seems to be possible, based on the way the season has been set up so far.
Theories and spoilers: Amara is the lynchpin
At this point, Amara/The Darkness (Emily Swallow) has to return, right? After popping back up in Supernatural s15 ep2, only to abandon her brother, Chuck/God (Rob Benedict). Seeing as the only one who truly has more power than Chuck is Amara, we suspect she has a decision to make.
Bear with us, we’re going deep here, but remember in Supernatural s5, the original Death (Julian Richings) said that someday, even God would die too? We see the finale including Amara having to choose to either align with Chuck or with Dean, as nobody would know Chuck’s vulnerabilities like his sister.
Theories and spoilers: Dastiel
We truly don’t know if Supernatural’s writers will ever pull the trigger on elevating the beloved bromance between Dean and Castiel into a legit romance. However, s15 ep8 did add a teeny bit of fuel to the flame.
Michael opened up a tear into Purgatory, for a short 12 hours. Dean and Castiel have the near-impossible task of using those 12 hours to find the nectar of a Leviathan blossom, needed for a spell to banish Chuck the way Amara once was.
Since Supernatural’s Purgatory is essentially a neverending forest filled with the souls of monsters, this task seems insurmountable. We couldn’t think of a better way to repair the fractures that have developed in Dean and Castiel’s relationship. We have our fingers crossed that this quest brings the bro-hugs and the “I need yous” back in their full glory.

Regardless of whether our theories come to fruition, we can’t wait for The CW’s Supernatural to resume on January 6th, 2020 at 8 p.m. EST / 7 p.m. CST
