The Unsung Heroes Behind the Camera; Professional Film Editor Tianjiao Zhu Shines as Stratosphere Wins Big

Sci-Fi woman-led film Stratosphere shines at international film festivals for its award-winning edits; Tianjiao Zhu receives tremendous praise for her work behind the camera.

Los Angeles, CA – The Sino-American Editor Behind the Cinematic Glory of Stratosphere.

[25th Nov, 2023] — The official media spokesperson for the professional editor in the indie filmmaking space, Tianjiao Zhu, issued a public statement extending her deep gratitude and thanks to audiences who appreciated the film Stratosphere for its brilliant editing and mind-blowing cinematography. The statement was released after the film garnered praise from the jury of critics at various international film festivals.

Tianjiao drew inspiration from Ryan Gosling’s 2018 film, First Man. The film closely reflects the main idea, as most of the screen time is shot inside a compact capsule similar to the First Man’s spaceship. With minimal music in the background to keep the viewer’s experience closer to reality, the editor ensured meticulous attention to detail for every shot, which resonated profoundly with the viewers. She overcame the challenge of a monotonous screenplay using her expertise and talent for creating compelling storytelling visuals with minimal resources. She focused on narrative storytelling through the eyes of the protagonist after exploring many angles that did not flow with the story. The end product was a masterpiece that left a lasting impression.

The film received an honorable mention at the SENE Screenwriting Contest and was a semifinalist at the Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival. Also nominated at the Pasadena International Film Festival, the film was officially selected at the FANCINE-Fantastic Film Festival of Málaga, Garden State Film Festival, Sioux City International Film Festival, New York Shorts International Film Festival, and Atlanta Horror Film Festival. The film was made during the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis, culminating in a bigger challenge for the crew and cast with limited resources. The film stars Giana Califano in the lead role. Levi Bernhardt and Gabriel Gonzalez are seen in supporting roles.

Stratosphere holds a special place in Tianjiao heart, for it allowed her to fully push herself out of the benchmark and try out the ultramodern, state-of-the-art technology present in filmmaking. It was her first experience shooting on a soundstage with a high-resolution LED screen, allowing the actors to view the live VFX background. It is much closer to reality and fully immerses the actors in the environment. Tianjiao finds most of her work motivated by the Academy Award-winning, globally renowned American film editor and director Walter Murch, whom she admires for his extraordinary synchronization of sound and picture.

In an interview with the local media, Tianjiao shared her prior friendship with the film director, Braden Kimble, whom she met at Chapman University during the MFA Film Production program. The experience the two shared during the creative workshops of the program fostered a healthy working relationship between them, which was seen during the shoot of Stratosphere. The collaboration was a perfect match; Tianjiao had little to no difficulty comprehending what Braden required and vice versa.

‘When Braden got me the script, I was very impressed by the engaging storyline. With the detailed descriptions of the environment, the costume, and the spaceship design, it was incredibly easy to picture the film in mind. The story depicts a female soldier’s psychological challenges in various situations, and the novel-like language resonated with me. Immediately, I knew this was meant for success, so I pitched myself to edit this film. Plan a group hangout or watch it with your family on a Sunday afternoon; you will love it! —- Professional Film Editor, Tianjiao Zhu.

Tianjiao was born in Nanjing, China, where she did her schooling. She attended a semi-international high school and studied for the international baccalaureate, which allowed her to become acquainted with diverse cultures, languages, and people. She moved to the United States of America for her higher studies and in pursuit of the numerous opportunities it has to offer. Her preferred genre to work on is human drama and action sequences.
