Sunny Zhao Explores Music, Memory and Sacrifice in ‘The Gift – Fantaisie-Impromptu’

Dreams Factory has announced the October 26th streaming premiere of The Gift – Fantaisie-Impromptu on Apple TV, Google Play, Amazon, YouTube and Fandango at Home. Made over a 12-year period, the debut feature from Emmy Award-winning director, co-writer and cinematographer Sunny Zhao weaves music, memory and creative ambition into the story of a young girl whose extraordinary talent leads her toward the concert stages of Paris — and the secrets surrounding the piano that changed her life.
When ten-year-old Abigail Phillips discovers a forgotten piano deep in the woods on her father’s farm, she finds more than an unexpected connection to music. Following her mother’s sudden death, the instrument becomes a source of solace and purpose, revealing a natural gift that soon reshapes her future. Recognizing her potential, her father sends her to Paris to pursue a career as a concert pianist while he investigates the piano’s mysterious origins.
As Abigail’s reputation grows, her father uncovers a hidden history of loss, longing and lives quietly connected by the instrument. Moving between past and present, The Gift – Fantaisie-Impromptu explores the relationship between artistic achievement and personal sacrifice, and the power of music to carry memories across generations.

Inspired by Zhao’s own background as a musician, the film grew from his childhood experiences at the piano and a fascination with the origins of creativity.
“I wanted to tell a story about the mysterious force of talent, and how creativity can shape—and sometimes reshape—the lives of those who encounter it,” comments Zhao.
That vision informed an extended production process designed to capture the passage of time authentically. The production filmed key locations across all four seasons, incorporating changing landscapes, falling rain and drifting snow through practical, on-location cinematography rather than AI-generated imagery. Scenes depicting Abigail’s childhood were filmed almost entirely with natural light.
The filmmakers also captured their young performer’s real-life development. Emma Barnet began portraying Abigail at age ten and continued through age fourteen and a half, returning at twenty-one after a six-year break to complete additional filming. Her physical transformation brings an added layer of authenticity to a story shaped by growth, memory and time.
Shot in anamorphic format, the film pairs expansive compositions with slow-motion imagery and rich, saturated colors to create a dreamlike visual atmosphere. Its musical approach brings together Romantic-period piano repertoire and symphonic performances of the score, connecting the intimacy of Abigail’s discovery with the scale of her artistic ambitions.
From the quiet Virginia countryside to the grand stages of Paris, The Gift – Fantaisie-Impromptu treats the piano as both an instrument and a witness — an object whose meaning deepens through the people who play it and the experiences they leave behind.
“The Gift – Fantaisie-Impromptu is a love letter to anyone who’s ever wondered where their talent comes from… and what they’re willing to sacrifice for it,” adds Zhao.
The cast includes Elyse DuFour as the adult Abigail Phillips and Emma Barnet as the young Abigail, alongside Gordon Bass, Garrette Chester and Stash Coleman. Written by Jeremy Fischer and Sunny Zhao, the film is produced by Clara Lee, Sunny Zhao and Phoenix Han, with Gerald Wong and Lei Xu serving as executive producers.
The Gift – Fantaisie-Impromptu debuts on Apple TV and Google Play beginning October 26th.
