IIHF World Juniors 2022 rescheduled for August 2022
The 2022 IIHF U20 event has been rescheduled. IIHF World Junior Championship will take place on Rogers Place in Edmonton from Aug 9 to 20.
The tournament for those under 20 started with the cities of Edmonton as well as Red Deer, Alberta on Dec. 26. It was then delayed for four days after competition in which Russia, Czechia and the United States, Czechia and Russia each had to forfeit a preliminary round game following positive testing for COVID-19.
Ten teams will be participating in the tournament. The United States, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland and Austria will compete in Group A. Canada, Finland, Czechia, Slovakia and Latvia will participate in Group B.
Latvia is now a replacement for Russia that was exiled from international competition because of its invasion into Ukraine.A date for games will be revealed at a later time.

IIHF the president Luc Tardiff said in February that the 2022 WJC could have the same roster that each nation had in December, irrespective of the fact that players will are turning 20 before the next tournament.
“We are talking with all participants and are negotiating on details,” Tardif stated. “It will be after the Hlinka Gretzky Cup. It will be a hockey festival and the teams are excited to do it.”
In 2022, the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, a tournament for under-18 athletes is scheduled for the first week of August . It will be played in Edmonton as well as Red Deer.
If the rosters stay the same, only the top five players picked for 2021’s NHL Draft would play. Defenseman Owen Power (No. 1 Buffalo Sabres), and forwards Mason McTavish (No. 3, Anaheim Ducks) and Kent Johnson (No. 5 Columbus Blue Jackets) were both on the Canada team when the tournament began in December.

Forward Matty Beniers (No. 2. Seattle Kraken), and defenseman Luke Hughes (No. 4. New Jersey Devils) were listed on the United States roster.
Defenseman Jake Sanderson, the No. 5 pick of the Ottawa Senators in the 2020 NHL Draft, was captain for the United States, which is seeking back-to-back championships for the first time in. The last team to achieve this was Canada that took home the title in the fifth consecutive titles in 2009.
The results and stats from the December games won’t count for the tournament that begins in August.
There won’t be a Relegation round in the 2022 WJC. This means that the 10 same teams are expected to participate in the 2023 event. The event is set to take place in Russia and the IIHF has stated that a set-up for the event will be decided at a later point.
