The Batman arrived in theaters in March 2022 as a standalone crime saga that pulled the Caped Crusader back toward his noir roots. Robert Pattinson stepped into the cowl for a story set during Batman’s second year as Gotham’s protector, trading spectacle for investigation and mood. The film has since settled into a steady life on streaming and home media, and the character continues to expand beyond the single movie.
Matt Reeves directed from a script he co-wrote with Peter Craig. The cast includes Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin. The movie runs 176 minutes and carries a PG-13 rating.
Critical Reception and Legacy
Reviewers responded to the film’s deliberate pace and its willingness to linger in rain-soaked streets and dimly lit rooms. It holds an 85 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus highlights the grim noir tone and Pattinson’s grounded performance. The picture earned three Academy Award nominations for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects. It also landed an IMDb user rating of 7.8 out of 10. Within the larger Batman filmography the movie sits apart from the brighter, more effects-heavy entries, and its visual language has already influenced later comic adaptations that favor atmosphere over constant action.
Streaming and Home Viewing Options
Viewers looking for a legal way to watch the film can find it on Max with a subscription. Rental and purchase options remain available on Amazon, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home. Physical editions arrived on 4K UHD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, and DVD in May 2022, complete with Dolby Atmos audio. These platforms replaced the torrent and unauthorized streaming links that circulated before the official release.
Franchise Expansion and Sequel
The Batman launched what Warner Bros. later branded the DC Elseworlds line, a label for projects that sit outside the main continuity. The Penguin, a limited series starring Colin Farrell, premiered on HBO in 2024 and followed the character through the power vacuum left after the film’s events. A sequel titled The Batman: Part II is now scheduled for October 1, 2027, with Matt Reeves returning to direct and Robert Pattinson confirmed to reprise the role. Filming is expected to begin in 2026. The project keeps the same grounded tone while expanding the supporting cast and the city’s criminal underworld.
Box Office and Commercial Performance
Produced on a reported budget between 185 and 200 million dollars, The Batman ultimately grossed 772.3 million dollars worldwide. That figure placed it seventh among all releases of 2022 and made it the highest-grossing Warner Bros. title of the pandemic era at the time. IMAX screenings accounted for a sizable portion of the domestic total, and the film maintained strong word-of-mouth through its opening month despite a three-hour runtime. Home video sales and streaming licensing have continued to add to its long-term revenue.
Production began under Ben Affleck before Reeves took over and recast the lead. Multiple pandemic-related delays pushed the original June 2021 date to March 4, 2022. Latin American markets opened around the same window, with Chile among the first territories to begin advance ticket sales. The finished film stayed true to its comic source material while carving out its own identity, and the decision to treat the story as an Elseworlds tale has given the creative team room to plan without tying it to larger DC Universe crossovers.
The technical credits sheet lists Matt Reeves as director, a Warner Bros. release, and a runtime now confirmed at 176 minutes. The cast remains unchanged from the initial announcements, with no major additions or replacements during post-production. Reception metrics and box-office totals now sit alongside the original production facts, giving a clearer picture of where the film stands five years after release.
