Xspurtz Duo Declares Malibu Crush the Funniest Film of the Year

In a recent episode of the Xspurtz Podcast, hosts Nick Stern and Jake Witterschein shared Malibu Crush was their favorite comedy of 2023 as they welcomed James Pratt, the lead actor of the uproarious comedy film onto their show. The episode titled Malibu Crush was dedicated to all things Malibu Crush, including Jake and Nick’s pitch for a sequel, their delight at seeing local pizza store Maria’s in the film, and why Google recommends watching Triangle of Sadness if you liked Malibu Crush.

Nick Stern, one-half of the popular podcast duo confessed he sensed the comedic brilliance of Malibu Crush the moment he popped open his IPA Beer during the film’s opening scene. As Michael Chase, the protagonist, weaves exaggerated tales of being a highly decorated firefighter turned actor, Nick found himself chucking out the beer and laughing at the same time with the line, “With six decades of ‘fighting experience.'”

Jake Witterschein described the choice to begin with the lead characters Michael and Dewy dropping everything to find Bridget, a girl whom Michael only dated for 2 weeks in high school was a great choice for a comedy and sets things up well.

Another key moment in the interview was when Jake and Nick pitched a sequel, The idea, of Michael feeling guilty for his relationship with Bridget convinces Dewy to pursue love again. The proposed storyline involves tracking down Rach Taylor who is going to the Coachella in the sequel.

James Pratt who won Best Actor at the Hollywood Film Festival for his role as Michael Chase said he was honoured to be on the duo’s show and found their comedy to be naturally funny. He also shared his own life experiences to be similar to Michael and Dewys, including when he studied at the prestigious acting school NIDA one of his friends as a joke on the first day told the teacher his dream was to learn to act as good as Jessica Simpson.

The episode also delves into the amusing world of Google recommendations and how it chooses its movies as Nick and Jake question the algorithm’s eclectic mix of comedies, including Bottoms and No Hard Feelings, recommended if you like Malibu Crush, alongside the unexpected addition of Triangle of Sadness, a heavy drama.

Nick, fuelled by three and a half modern-time beers, hailed the movie as a great experience, while Jake, who had no beers raved it’s a fantastic film to laugh at while sober.

To underscore the impact of Malibu Crush, Nick and Jake announced their newfound favorite hangout the car park. This decision pays homage to the film’s memorable scenes between Michael ( Pratt ), Natalie ( Demitra Sealy ) Dewy ( Billy White ) and Tiffany ( Yuan Lin ) hanging out in the car park.
