All the signs that Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are headed for divorce
Well, it’s no surprise that the world is speculating about an upcoming divorce from the Smiths. After a shocking show of aggression and pent-up irritation at this year’s Academy Awards, Will & Jada Pinkett Smith’s relationship seems to only be going downhill from here. Despite their marriage lasting an impressive twenty-five years, the couple has been oddly open about their marital strifes.
From a tear-filled wedding ceremony (not happy tears) to cold-hearted cheating, Will Smith & Jada Pinkett Smith are clearly on the path to divorce. As you can imagine, the aftermath of a divorce between these two stars could likely create one of the messiest celebrity divorces since Brangelina.
Uncover all the clues that this couple is headed for splitsville. Meanwhile, we’ll also unpack what would become of the two A-list actors and their fortunes if they refuse to work on their marriage. Find all the spilled tea and more here:
Rocky from the start
Actress Jada Pinkett Smith has made it clear that she disagreed with their marriage from day one. In an episode of her Facebook Watch series Red Table Talk, Smith sat down with her mother Adrienne Banfield-Jones, husband Will, and daughter Willow Smith.
In the discussion on her marriage to Will, Jada openly admitted to crying on her wedding day because she “never wanted to be married.” She described the wedding that took place in 1997 while she was pregnant with her son Jaden as “a horrible wedding.” Ouch.
At the time, Jada Pinkett was three months pregnant with her and Will’s first child, Jaden. The actress confessed that when she discovered that she was pregnant with Will’s child, she cried “the whole night.” She felt pressured by her mother to quickly have a wedding in order to avoid having a child out of wedlock.
Pinkett Smith also revealed that she felt her life was “never going to be the same” and she “was under so much pressure being a young actress — being young, pregnant, I was just like, I didn’t know what to do. But I knew I never wanted to be married.”
She added that she was “so upset that I had to have a wedding” and “cried the whole way down the aisle.” Definitely not a good start to any marriage.
Cheating or polyamory?
If crying down the aisle doesn’t ruin a marriage, then infidelity will definitely do the trick. In 2020, singer August Alsina disclosed that he’d had an affair with Pinkett Smith. Only days later, Will & Jada addressed the scandal on her show in which she famously referred to the affair as an “entanglement”.
However, is it still considered an affair if the couple decides to ditch monogamy? In an interview with GQ, Smith admitted that while their relationship was at first monogamous, they eventually opened their relationship due to them being “both miserable and clearly something had to change.”
Despite this interview, the public began seeing Will as a victim of a toxic marriage. As a result, he addressed the matter by revealing, “Jada never believed in conventional marriage. Jada had family members that had an unconventional relationship. So she grew up in a way that was very different than how I grew up.”
Tensions after the Oscar slap debacle
Now, it seems like the Oscar controversy is just the tip of the iceberg. Since the event, sources have claimed that the couple is as broken as ever. “Ever since the Oscars scandal, tensions between them have been palpable,” an insider told Heat Magazine.
“There have been problems for years, but they’re barely speaking right now. If they were to split, Will has a fortune of $350million that Jada would be entitled to half of under Californian law. It could be one of the ugliest divorces in showbiz history and drag on longer than Angelina’s and Brad’s did.”
The inside source added, “Will obviously doesn’t want that, but there is only so much he can take.”
