Rome Film Festival: Scorsese recalls final call with Fellini in new doc, per ‘Variety’
According to Variety, Martin Scorsese recalls his final phone call with Federico Fellini in the new documentary “The Last Fellini,” which premieres at the Rome Film Festival on October 17, 2026.
Variety reports that Scorsese describes speaking with Fellini the day after the Italian director received an honorary Oscar in Los Angeles in 1993. Scorsese quotes Fellini saying, “Thank you, Martin. Thank you, thank you. You know, I’ll see you soon.”
The film, directed by Gianluigi Attorre and produced by Atomic and RAI Cinema, focuses on Fellini’s final decade. Scorsese also recounts in the documentary how he and Fellini had planned an unmade series on film production roles, with Scorsese securing $1 million in financing through Universal before Fellini’s death in October 1993, Variety reports.
The documentary features interviews with Roberto Benigni, Nicola Piovani, Vincenzo Mollica, Milo Manara, and Fellini’s secretary Fiammetta Profili. It draws on private archives and previously unseen footage. International sales are handled by PiperPlay, according to Variety.
