‘Golden Girls’ reboot: The show has been given an all-Black cast

Get out your homemade cheesecake and get ready for the more entertaining Zoom meeting to date. Zoom is hosting a reimagined episode of Golden Girls starring an all-Black cast. Regina King, Sanaa Lathan, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Alfre Woodard will star in the new rendition of The Golden Girls as a part of Zoom’s new virtual watch party series, The Zoom Where it Happens.

This reimagination of the beloved classic TV show will be streamed through Zoom on Tuesday, September 8 at 6 PM PDT. Here are all the details about the watch party event.

The reimagined cast

With such a critically acclaimed cast, The Golden Girls is in great hands. According to an Instagram post each actress shared, Regina King will play Dorothy, Sanaa Lathan will play Blanche, Tracee Ellis Ross will play Rose, and Alfre Woodard will play Sophia.

It isn’t clear whether the cast will reenact an old episode or use new material, but the event’s description states Lena Waithe will host the virtual watch party and the episode will be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, who received praise earlier this year for Netflix’s popular action film The Old Guard

While we don’t know if there’ll be any other surprise guest, these four actresses are some of the best in the business. It’s safe to say, we’re in for a treat.

How to sign up

To watch this rendition of Golden Girls, you must register for the Zoom call before the episode starts streaming on Tuesday, September 8 at 6 PM PDT. Registration is free, so be sure to get your name in before time runs out.

This episode of The Zoom Where it Happens will be in support of Color of Change, “the nation’s largest online racial justice organization”, according to the description of the event. Organizers also hope this watch party will “further engage our community and drive change” during this year’s election season.

Since this is only the first installment of The Zoom Where it Happens, this special remake of The Golden Girls seems to be just the first in a series of reimaginations & reunions of your favorite classic TV series.
