Friday Flicks: ‘Ghost Stories’, ‘Godard Mon Amour’, ‘Little Pink House’
It’s that time again, folks. Marvel’s about to drop its next superhero flick, Avengers: Infinity War, uniting the past and future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a culmination of ten years of superhero blockbusters. It comes as no surprise that it’s predicted to have a monstrous opening at the box office on its April 27 release, with projections increasing to between $190 million and $235 million. As Variety pointed out, “If those numbers continue to increase, Infinity War could be eyeing the highest premiere of all time.” Chaching!
Elsewhere, Cannes Film Festival announced its 2018 lineup this week. The female-heavy Competition jury (including none other than K-Stew) features a damn sight more women than its Competition category (the lineup of which includes just three female directors out of seventeen filmmakers). However, this year’s event comes with a new set of draconian rules: the cancellation of press screenings, no more red carpet selfies, and a Netflix competition ban (which as you likely know went down like a shit sandwich). Not that Netflix cares, as it breezily declared last week its decision to pull out of the festival.
Anyway, enough about Avengers assembling and Netflix chillin’. It’s time to turn your attention to all the great indie cinema hitting the big screen this weekend. In this spine-tingling three-parter, we follow Professor Phillip Goodman – a debunker of all things paranormal. Having devoted his life to exposing phony psychics and fraudulent supernatural shenanigans on his own television show, his skepticism is put to the test when he stumbles across a long-lost file containing details of three cases of inexplicable hauntings. Stars Martin Freeman (Sherlock), Andy Nyman (The Commuter), Alex Lawther (Freak Show), and Paul Whitehouse (The Death of Stalin).
Godard Mon Amour (Cohen Media Group)

Michel Hazanavicius’s slyly funny biopic stars the relentlessly wonderful Louis Garrel (The Dreamers) as the auteur Jean-Luc Godard. Once again, the director transports audiences back to a unique and important time and place in cinematic history – 60s France – where actress Anne Wiazemsky (Stacy Martin) finds herself juggling political protests and artistic challenges in her married life with the renowned filmmaker. As such, Godard Mon Amour is truly a story of real love and reel love.
The Devil and Father Amorth (The Orchard)

In 1973, director William Friedkin brought us the iconic horror classic, The Exorcist. 45 years later, the Academy Award-winning director brings us the real deal with The Devil and Father Amorth. Pondering on how close his film came to reality, this documentary sees Friedkin attend and film Father Amorth’s ninth exorcism on a woman who has been experiencing troubling fits and behavioral changes that psychiatry could not fix. Get ready for some real scares!

Ed Harris (Apollo 13) is back, baby, in a film that journeys back to when the era of Kodachrome color film was phased out. Jason Sudeikis (Colossal) plays an estranged son who embarks on a road trip with his dying father (Harris) and nurse (Elizabeth Olsen) in tow, their mission to deliver four old rolls of Kodachrome film to the last lab in the world that can develop them before it shuts down for good.
Little Pink House (Dada Films)

Based on a true story, Little Pink House follows a nurse named Susette Kelo who leaves a bad marriage and starts over in a new town. After settling down, refurbishing a rundown cottage in her own little pink house, and finding a great new beau, Susette is distraught to discover a group of politicians are bent on bulldozing her neighborhood and handing the land over to pharmaceutical giant, Pfizer Corporation. With the help of a young lawyer named Scott Bullock (Giacomo Baessato), Susette emerges as the reluctant leader of her neighbors in an epic battle that goes all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court and helped millions of Americans to protect their homes.
