Does ‘Variety’ rank ‘Backrooms’ movie among 2026’s best horror?

Variety's "The Best Horror Movies of 2026 (So Far), Ranked" opens by naming "Backrooms" among the year's low-budget box-office successes, pairing it with "Obsession" as titles that helped keep multiplexes busy. The article frames 2026 as "a wild year for horror," contrasting those hits with sequels "the world could have lived without" such as "Scream 7" and "The Strangers – Chapter 3." It then states that "many of them were good-to-great" before presenting the ranked list of standouts, explicitly placing "Backrooms" inside that group.
