Is a new ‘Bill and Ted’ movie in the works? Read what the cast has to say
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Journey is a classic movie from the 80s that continues to be quoted by fans who grew up with it. Alex Winter & Keanu Reeves became breakout stars from their roles as the titular characters. One of the few bright spots in 2020 was a third entry in the Bill & Ted series, Bill & Ted Face The Music.
With a 2020 comeback for Bill & Ted, many fans are wondering if this third entry is the beginning of even more films with the two totally radical characters. Winter has addressed if there could be a potential fourth film or if Bill & Ted Face The Music is their final adventure through time & space.
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure
The first entry in this franchise debuted in 1989. It stars Winter as William “Bill” S. Preston, Esq & Reeves as Ted “Theodore” Logan. The two are a pair of simple-minded best friends in San Dimas, CA, who want to form a successful rock band, the “Wyld Stallyns.” However, their grades in school threaten to kill their musical careers.
Unknown to them, the future is a utopian society, formed by their music which united the world. This society sends Rufus (George Carlin) to assist the two so that the future can be saved. Bill & Ted then go on a totally excellent time-travel adventure as they collect various historical figures for their history report. The two journey & cause havoc in time periods such as the wild west, ancient Greece, and medieval London.
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure was a hit with both critics & at the box office. Many enjoyed the bizarre concept, mixed with likable characters. The performances by Winter & Reeves became iconic.
Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey
The sequel, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, isn’t quite as well received. In the sequel, a villain from the future sends evil robot versions of Bill & Ted to travel back in time and kill the real Bill & Ted before they put on a performance that unites the world. Instead of time-travel, this movie sees Bill & Ted journeying to Heaven & Hell to get back to the living realm and save the day.
The reception of this sequel was mixed in 1991 and continues to be divisive today. While some enjoy how the sequel didn’t feel like a repeat of the first and took Bill & Ted on a completely new journey, others felt it’s too strange for its own good. However, everyone unanimously agrees William Sadler steals the show as a hilarious version of Death.
Bill & Ted Face The Music
Bill & Ted Face The Music finds the titular duo as middle aged parents who are down on their luck and struggling to renew their success in music. They are once again contacted by the future & tasked to write a song that unites the world or else the universe will fall apart. Bill & Ted decide to travel around to their future selves to find the song which unites the universe.
In this third entry, Bill & Ted are joined by their two daughters, played by Brigette Lundy-Paine & Samara Weaving, who both do solid impressions of their movie parents. Sadler also returns briefly to fans’ delight as Death. The third entry received mostly positive reviews from both critics & audiences. In an interview with Collider, Winter spoke about the enjoyment he felt returning to this role after almost thirty years.
“We made this film because Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon came to Keanu [Reeves] and myself with an idea that we thought was genuinely both hilarious and emotional, which is not easy”, Winter said. “We would never have done it, if it didn’t do both of those things because frankly there would have been no way to play the characters, if it didn’t do both of those things. We like working together.”
Will there be a fourth movie?
According to Collider, Winter said there are currently no plans for a fourth Bill & Ted movie, however, it is not a definitive no that there will never be another one.
“We don’t particularly feel there needs to be another one, but we would enjoy making another one,” Winter said. “That’s really the honest answer. There’s nothing more to it. We are not currently planning another one. Certainly, no one has come to us and asked us to do another one.”
“I don’t know where those chips are gonna fall,” Winter added. “I can tell you that, if there was interest in making another one, and Keanu and I had the ability to come in and do something that would be as satisfying as what we just did, sure. We would both be interested in doing that.”

It appears there are no plans to make a fourth Bill & Ted movie anytime soon. However, don’t give up hope as the film industry is constantly rebooting & creating sequels for old franchises all the time. If a fourth movie does come, it better be most excellent or else that would be most heinous.
