What to watch: The best shows on Apple TV+
We get it, the streaming wars are hurting your wallet. Between Netflix, Hulu, HBO Go, Disney+, Amazon Prime, Apple TV+, and CBS All Access, and the upcoming HBO Max, Peacock, and god knows what else, that’s a lot of money. But some of these are more worth your while than others.
Like why spend your money on Peacock to watch reruns of The Office and Friends when these other networks are putting out fresh, innovative content? Apple TV+ is proving it’s easily a driving force in the streaming game thanks to its lined pockets from its overpriced phones and computers. But as we make fun of them, they got a show with Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Anniston that’s award-worthy. The joke is on us.
So, if you’re not 100% sold on adding Apple TV+ to your streaming collection, a quick stroll through their excellent originals might be the tipping point you need. Keep in mind, there’s still more shows scheduled to come out on Apple TV+ at some point that looks just as good, but we’re only talking about already released shows.
Servant
We’re shocked too, especially after the disappointing Glass. But Servant, just like Wayward Pines, proves that M. Night Shyamalan and his storytelling is made for TV. Watching the Turners treat this doll like their child who they lost is somehow just as twisted as the idea of the doll being the deceased Jerico. But if you think that’s the end of the twists, then you’ve never seen a psychological horror movie.
The Morning Show
It’s no surprise this is getting praised. A show critiquing TV and Hollywood culture while being on a non-traditional streaming service? Just the right kind of crazy. While definitely depressing to see the beloved Steve Carell play a man outed after a sexual harassment claim, it really echos real life after Matt Lauer got fired from The Today Show. If you like your TV to be just a bit too realistic, The Morning Show has you covered.
Oprah’s Book Club
Oprah Winfrey is back on TV!!!! With a talk show!!! Obviously, if you ever watched the original Oprah Winfrey Show you know about Oprah’s Book Club. Even if you never did, she continued the book club online long after the show ended on cable. But now, every two months, you can tune in to America’s most beloved talk show host and watch her discuss her book of the month like old times. For once, nostalgia is a good thing.
Dickinson
The idea of a more traditional period drama with a modern touch is not new. But the idea of bringing the bold and outspoken Emily Dickinson to life as a feminist teenager is something unexplored before. Especially adding in her love affair with her brother’s fiancee and her best friend Sue. While not everyone will enjoy the breaking of the classical era, it captures exactly who Dickinson was as a poet, and as a woman.
Little America
Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon have proven with The Big Sick they know how to pull on your heartstrings with heartfelt true stories. Based on stories in Epic Magazine, the two are working together again on a show shining a light on the true stories of immigrants in America and their inspiring and heartfelt stories. While it sounds like this is just inspiration porn the TV show, it’s actually tastefully done and leaves you feeling good inside.
Snoopy in Space
Of course, the big question for families is the availability of family-friendly content on the streaming service. Apple TV+ has Peanuts, which is always a favorite for all ages. And while it can’t capture the magic of the holiday specials we know and love, Snoopy in Space comes pretty close.
