Sonic the Hedgehog
Movies based on video games usually get a bad rap, but don’t dismiss the anthropomorphic blue-furred speedster yet. After the disastrous first trailer drop, Paramount Pictures’ live-action adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog somewhat redeemed itself with a much-needed redesign before superhero speedsters ultimately raced into theatres.
Directed by Jeff Fowler, the movie revolves around Sonic, a speed-powered hedgehog, who unwittingly sparks the attention of uncool evil genius Dr. Robotnik. The blue hedgehog must defeat Dr. Robotnik before he uses Sonic’s unique power to achieve world domination. For fans of the classic Sega game, this new live-action comedy adventure addition to Amazon Prime is a must-watch.
One Night in Miami
It is February 25th, 1964, and the newly crowned heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali is celebrating his win over Sonny Liston in Hampton House of Miami with civil rights activist Malcolm X, footballer Jim Brown, and singer Sam Cooke. The movie’s fictionalized meeting of four successful black icons chronicles the responsibility & struggle they faced as public figures in a segregated America.
In her directorial debut, Regina King does a magnificent job of reimagining history all the while commenting on the persistent disparities of the present. Based on Kemp Powers’s 2013 play, the movie features Leslie Odom Jr., Kingsley Ben-Adir, Eli Goree, and Aldis Hodge giving an Oscar-worthy performance. All in all, One Night in Miami is a powerful & timely cinematic experience you don’t wanna miss out on.
The Village
The Village is set in an isolated rural town whose population is being terrorized by creatures inhabiting the woods beyond it. The people have a shaky truce with the monsters that leads to relative calm if all of them stay out of the woods. But when one of the young villagers becomes ill, a blind girl ignores the elders of the village to make a dangerous journey to fetch medicine from a nearby community.
Many movie buffs believe that M. Night Shyamalan’s hot streak ended with The Village. But don’t let his supposed fall from grace stop you from giving this psychological thriller another try. If you take away the out-of-nowhere clincher, what you’re left with is a compelling period drama with stomach-churning psychological thriller elements to spice things up.
The Map of Tiny Perfect Things
Equal parts quirky & emotional, The Map of Tiny Perfect Things is a perfect movie to curl up with. The charming rom-com revolves around two teens who develop a budding romance while stuck in an ever-repeating time-loop reliving the same day over & over again. Based on a short story by Lev Grossman, this is a heartwarming movie about finding life’s meaning and appreciating the positives in life.
This Groundhog Day-esque movie is directed by Ian Samuels who manages to get knockout performances from his stars Kathryn Newton & Kyle Allen. All things considered, The Map of Tiny Perfect Things is a movie you’ll wanna stream again & again. You can catch Mark & Margaret in their upside-down bubble exclusively on Amazon Prime.
