Brendan Fraser’s Film, The Whale, Surpasses $10 Million at the Box Office – Triumph of Indie Success
Brendan Fraser’s film The Whale, directed by Darren Aronofsky, has achieved significant milestones at the domestic box office and in the awards circuit. The movie has crossed $10 million in ticket sales in the domestic market, a notable achievement for an indie film in the pandemic era.
Additionally, Fraser won the Best Actor trophy at the 6th Annual Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) Film Awards for his role as a reclusive and morbidly obese English teacher in The Whale.
The film was also among the 10 nominees for the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures. However, it was Everything Everywhere All at Once that ultimately won the award, which was also produced by the same production company, A24.
Insights from a bariatric surgery provider: unveiling the truth behind The Whale
Although it didn’t win the award, The Whale has sparked discussions and debates surrounding its portrayal of obesity and the emotional challenges faced by individuals struggling with weight issues. It’s time to uncover the truth behind this thought-provoking film.
We are thrilled Jenn Christine, CEO of Be Slim Bariatrics (BSB), a company that arranges bariatric surgery, agreed to join us to share her perspective of the film, providing insights into the film’s representation of obesity and its impact on individuals.
1. The Obesity Action Coalition was consulted for the making of The Whale — is this a group you are familiar with?
I am familiar with this organization, which serves as a support and reference group for individuals experiencing severe obesity. I certainly think the OAC has the expertise to contribute to the film’s realistic depiction of the main character’s journey.
2. Did the film provide a realistic portrayal of obesity and physical health?
While it’s important to acknowledge that not all individuals with obesity experience the exact same hurdles, different people may relate to different aspects of his journey, as personal experiences vary. For example, even individuals who are not severely obese, like myself, may still find moments in the story that resonate with their own struggles.
It’s worth noting that the main character’s portrayal captures the impact of grief on his weight gain, which aligns with various factors, such as stress response, binge eating, comfort eating, disrupted routines, and reduced physical activity.
3. Do you think the way Charlie is portrayed is detrimental to individuals struggling with obesity?
While the portrayal is accurate as far as possible in relation to the actual struggles that Charlie is facing and how they have contributed to his obesity, the film The Whale is not a true story. When it comes to any work of fiction that is representing such a complex issue as obesity, it’s crucial to acknowledge that the portrayal of the main characters can have a negative impact.
As a bariatric surgery provider, I do feel that the film’s narrative may perpetuate negative stereotypes or reinforce harmful perceptions about obesity. Although the film draws inspiration from real-life experiences, there is a potential risk of viewers associating the portrayal of Charlie’s character to all individuals with obesity. The film should be viewed with sensitivity, recognizing that it represents just one individual’s story and can and will not reflect the experiences of everyone struggling with obesity.
- Do you think The Whale accurately depicts the challenges of providing support and understanding to a loved one with obesity?
Liz’s role showcases the challenging dynamic between support and encouraging healthier choices. This portrayal reflects a common dilemma faced by family members or caregivers of individuals with limited life expectancy. In situations where the person’s remaining days are limited, there is often a desire to prioritize their immediate happiness.
In the main character’s case, weight loss surgery may not have been immediately feasible due to his BMI. It is likely that he would have required a weight loss program to lose a certain amount of weight before considering surgery. Liz, a nurse and caregiver, could have played a role in suggesting Charlie seek support from bariatric surgery professionals at an earlier stage of his journey to manage his weight. What’s important is that every individual is unique, and overcoming obesity is a challenging journey that requires support and significant effort. It is no easy feat.
5. Can bariatric surgery promote body positivity?
Bariatric surgery plays a significant role in promoting body positivity by enabling patients to redefine their self image. The surgery facilitates significant weight loss, leading to improved health outcomes, increased mobility, enhanced energy levels, and better overall wellbeing. These positive changes contribute to a more positive self perception and body image.
Bariatric surgery also comes with support, including education on nutrition and lifestyle changes, further empowering patients to develop a healthier relationship with their bodies and food. However, it is important to remember that body positivity and self acceptance extend beyond surgical interventions and involve individual journeys.
6. How well does The Whale represent the social stigma of obesity and the effects of ‘fatphobia’?
The Whale sheds light on the societal perception of obesity and its impact on individuals’ self esteem. In the film, Charlie’s shame and self isolation seem to stem from the perceptions of others and a feeling of unworthiness. This mirrors a part of the struggle faced by many individuals struggling with obesity. Furthermore, research into the impact of obesity stigma shows that weight discrimination can lead to negative psychological outcomes and worsen individuals’ self esteem.
By centering the film around Charlie and highlighting his struggle with social stigma, fatphobia, and self acceptance, the film encourages viewers to reflect on their perceptions of others, promoting empathy and understanding.
7. Do you have anything else to add?
The Whale provides valuable insights into the emotional and psychological challenges faced by individuals struggling with obesity; however, it’s essential to recognize the uniqueness of each individual’s journey and avoid generalizations. Ultimately, whatever you personally think about the film, The Whale serves as a catalyst for conversations about body image, societal perceptions, and the importance of understanding and the appropriate support that is critical in the lives of individuals affected by obesity.
