George Finn Finds Strength, Loyalty, and Purpose in Atlas King
For George Finn, acting has never simply been about becoming someone else. It’s about discovering another piece of himself.
Over the course of a career that has taken him from LOL and Time Lapse to appearances in S.W.A.T., The Mentalist, and How I Met Your Mother, Finn has come to see every role as an opportunity for self-discovery.
“Each character teaches you something about yourself,” he says. “The more I’ve acted, the better I’ve been able to learn who I really am.”
That philosophy lies at the heart of Atlas King, the upcoming action thriller in which Finn plays Tommy, a fiercely loyal fighter determined to honor his late father’s legacy while navigating a dangerous criminal underworld. While the film delivers hard-hitting action and high-stakes conflict, it was Tommy’s emotional journey; not his physical one, that first captured Finn’s attention.
“I was drawn in by how Tommy is able to bear this burden and fight with it with every part of his being,” Finn says. “I know what it means to lose a father, and figuring out how to live with it without letting yourself become a victim to fate.”
The connection wasn’t something he had to manufacture. It came from personal experience, giving Tommy’s grief and resilience an authenticity that shaped Finn’s performance from the inside out.
Ironically, the emotional preparation was matched by one of the most physically demanding roles of his career.
To transform into Tommy, Finn spent three months training twice a day, five days a week, immersing himself in mixed martial arts, Muay Thai, wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, stunt work, and strength training. Surrounded by professional fighters; including former UFC Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping, he entered a world that was entirely unfamiliar.
“The grueling physical work allowed me to figure out a deeper emotional connection to Tommy,” he says. “Tommy bears a heavy burden, but his release is fighting. That’s where he gets to let it all out.”
Working alongside Bisping proved equally memorable.
“Working with him was an honor,” Finn says. “He was extremely generous as a scene partner as well as a friend.”
Although Atlas King is built around underground fights and organized crime, Finn believes audiences will connect most with something far quieter: the relationships between Tommy, Atlas, and Bender.
“I think the thing that will surprise people most is the friendship between Atlas, Tommy, and Bender,” he says. “There is a loyalty and an understanding of what’s right that really ties them together.”
It’s a theme that resonates well beyond the screen.
“Loyalty has always been important to me,” Finn says. “In my own life it’s a value I hold dear.”
That sense of commitment extended behind the camera as well. In addition to starring in the film, Finn also served as a producer, an experience that gave him a deeper appreciation for the collaborative nature of filmmaking. Watching every department work toward a shared creative vision reinforced something he has learned throughout his career: the strongest performances are never created alone.
Finn’s own journey into acting began almost by accident. At 12 years old, he started taking acting classes after his mother encouraged him to give it a try. It wasn’t until he was 16, however, when his brother cast him in the lead role of a short film, that everything changed.
“I remember falling in love with it then and there,” he says. “I was happy to act for the rest of my life.”
More than two decades later, that passion remains unchanged.
“I think to truly pursue it you have to be a bit mad,” Finn says with a laugh. “It’s a crazy life, but I think of it as an adventure. There are highs and lows, but the entire ride is entertaining.”
That perspective has shaped the way he approaches every role. Rather than searching for ways to become his characters, Finn looks for the pieces they already share.
“It’s important to me to make all my characters feel real but interesting,” he says. “You learn from every project, and especially from the people you work with. Each project has had an effect on me and helped me grow.”
As Atlas King prepares to make its debut, Finn hopes audiences leave having enjoyed the ride.
“The thing I want most is for the audience to be entertained,” he says. “The movie has action, drama, intensity, but overall I want them to enjoy the ride.”
For him, however, the film’s lasting message goes beyond the action. Tommy’s journey is ultimately about finding the strength to keep moving forward, trusting the people around you, and refusing to let loss define your future.
“If you stay true to what you know is right and fight for it,” Finn says, “you get to keep moving forward.”
It’s a lesson Tommy learns over the course of Atlas King. And, in many ways, it’s one George Finn has been discovering through every role he’s ever played.
