ReelShort to debut Ann Liang adaptation on November 26
ReelShort has set a November 26 debut for its vertical adaptation of Ann Liang's novel under embargo until that date. The project carries the title I Hope This Doesn’t Find You and adapts the academic rivals-to-lovers romance. The first half of episodes launches November 26. The remaining episodes follow on December 5. This rollout delivers the story in two parts through the platform's mobile format.
The source novel I Hope This Doesn’t Find You received a 2024 Goodreads Choice Award nomination in Readers’ Favorite Young Adult Fiction. The title has drawn more than 89,000 ratings on the Goodreads platform, indicating broad reader interest ahead of the screen version.
The series follows an overachieving student whose carefully constructed life implodes when her brutally honest emails are leaked to the entire school, including the infuriating academic rival standing between her and a life-changing scholarship. Sadie Wen is Woodvale’s best student, and Julius Gong, the hottest guy in school, is the only person standing between her and the scholarship that could save her family. But when a vicious act of sabotage exposes her most private emails to the entire school, Sadie and Julius are forced together in ways that make it impossible to tell the difference between rivalry and something neither of them is ready to name. The deliberate act of sabotage triggers the exposure and pulls the pair into closer contact.
Public humiliation, simmering tension and slow-burn romance define the tone. The adaptation conveys the author's sharp and emotionally charged narrative through ReelShort's mobile-first presentation that prioritizes vertical viewing on handheld screens.
Travis Owens and Esther Li lead the cast of the vertical series adaptation.
Seventeen-year-old Sadie Wen is perfect on paper. It’s a reputation she’s fought hard to earn at the highly prestigious Woodvale Academy, and one she’s determined to maintain until graduation. The trick to keeping her model-student-smile plastered on her face at all times? She channels all her petty frustrations into her email drafts. One for the math teacher who refused to round her eighty-nine-point-nine percent up to ninety; one for the girl who blatantly copied her science project and took the credit for it. But most of her vehemently-worded emails are for her smug, infuriating co-captain, Julius Gong, who’s been the sharpest thorn in her side ever since they were kids. Sadie never meant for these emails to get out … but now her whole life is about to change.
Ann Liang wrote the novel. She holds New York Times, USA Today and Indie bestseller status for her young adult and adult fiction. Kathleen Rushall of the Andrea Brown Literary Agency represents her.
The nomination places the novel in the Readers’ Favorite Young Adult Fiction category of the 2024 Goodreads Choice Awards.
