Marta Torres short film makes world premiere at LABRFF

Brazilian filmmaker Marta Torres will hold the world premiere of her short film Sweet Suite California at the Los Angeles Brazilian Film Festival on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at The Culver Theater in Culver City. The film is nominated for Best International Short.

The story follows Courtney, a foreign social media influencer who arrives in Los Angeles carrying a suitcase of Hollywood illusions. Her encounter with the city reveals a harsher reality than expected. Inspired by actual events, the narrative examines online addiction, mental health struggles, digital exploitation, human trafficking and homelessness on Los Angeles streets.

Sweet Suite California is a low-budget independent production shot entirely in Los Angeles. An international cast includes performers from Brazil, Russia, the United States, Turkey, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic, giving the film a multicultural ensemble.

Marta Torres wrote, directed, produced and stars in the film. She previously produced, directed and starred in Virtuality, which premiered at the Chelsea Film Festival in New York in 2024. In 2026 she appeared as lead actress in Memorarium at the same festival.

Torres holds a master’s degree in bioethics and has worked as a bank employee, teacher, police chief and public defender. Her storytelling often incorporates surrealist elements drawn from her upbringing in a region marked by social inequality and natural beauty.

The project originated from a story Torres heard from a former CIA agent several years earlier. After arriving in California in 2022, she incorporated additional urgent themes, including references to the Epstein case in the United States and the Vorcaro case in Brazil.

Torres intends the film to prompt viewers to distinguish virtual experiences from physical reality and to focus on the people and finite lives around them. She approaches difficult subjects such as trafficking and homelessness by balancing harsh realities with a necessary touch of sweetness to respect audience emotions.

The premiere carries special weight for Torres as the first screening of a zero-budget Brazilian production created in Los Angeles. She describes the moment as the realization of a long-held personal desire and evidence that independent, anarchic art remains possible inside existing systems.

Torres notes that independent production involves repeated challenges yet centers on the ongoing process rather than any single destination. She advises emerging filmmakers to study extensively, give their best effort in each action, practice patience and work only with people whose company they enjoy.

The multicultural cast reflects Torres’s view that stories of this kind could unfold in any large city. Her next project is a feature film exploring how artificial intelligence has already altered human interactions. She is also open to acting roles in productions directed by others.
