2024 Golf Tournament Preview: What to Expect and Who to Watch

Movies, series, and reality TV aren’t the only action-packed viewing! Whether you’re already a golf fan or simply curious about why it’s worth watching, we’ve laid it out in an easy 2024 golf tournament preview so you can spot a tournament or player at a glance.

Major Championships

The Majors are, as their name suggests, the biggest tournaments of the year. While the PGA Tour and LIV Golf are now huge contenders, these tournaments have a history and regality that’s hard to dispute.

The Masters (April 8 to 14)

Save the dates, because you don’t want to miss the world’s biggest and most-loved golf tournament! In 2024, the 88th Masters will be held at its usual home, Augusta National, from April 8th to 14th.

Being the only invitational Major and with fewer than 100 players competing for the coveted green jacket, it’s a hard-fought battle. If you can only watch one tournament this year, the Masters should be it—it’s a legendary event.

PGA Championship (May 13 to 19)

The PGA Championship is probably the most well-known of the majors, although it’s generally the least popular amongst serious golf fans. That being said, it’s still a huge event that golfers flock to and viewers eagerly watch.

One of the things that makes this tournament an exciting one is what’s up for grabs. This isn’t just a trophy—winners get lifetime entry into the US PGA Tour and guaranteed places in the other three majors for 5 years. Set aside time from May 13th to 19th to watch!

US Open (June 10 to 16)

The US Open comes with the biggest monetary prize outside of LIV golf—around $12 million at this time. If you’d like to watch some of the best golfers in the world battling it out for that purse, set your reminders for June 10th to 16th!

It’s much more popular in the US than Europe (which is fairly obvious), so despite not having quite the clout of the Masters, this tournament is always wildly popular.

The Open Championship (July 18 to 21)

Previously known as the British Open, the Open Championship is sprinkled with history… And perhaps its glow comes partly from being held in or close to the physical and spiritual home of the sport, Scotland.

The 2024 Open will be held at Royal Troon Golf Club in South Ayrshire, from July 18th to 21st. If you’re in or near Scotland (or looking for an excuse to travel) save these dates—not only will you see fantastic golf, but there’s something magical about the surrounding Scottish countryside that you’ll enjoy as much as the sport.

LIV Golf 2024

LIV Golf has been controversial since its inception, but there’s no denying it’s excellent golf. The tournament runs throughout the year and plays at some superb locations, so if you follow it, you won’t be short of golfing action From Feb through September.

Keep these dates and places in mind if you’re a LIV fan or just want to see some exciting, differently-structured golf.

  • Mayakoba, Mexico (February 2 to 4)
  • Las Vegas, USA (February 8 to 10)
  • Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (March 1 to 3)
  • Hong Kong (March 8 to 10)
  • Florida, USA (April 5 to 7)
  • Adelaide, Australia (April 26 to 28)
  • Singapore (May 3 to 5)
  • Houston, USA (June 7 to 9)
  • Nashville, USA (June 21 to 23)
  • Andalucia, Spain (July 12 to 14)
  • England (July 26 to 28)
  • West Virginia, USA (August 16 to 18)
  • Chicago, USA (September 13 to 15)
  • Dallas, USA (September 20 to 22)

Well-Known Championships

There’s even more goodness outside of the majors and the LIV Golf tournaments. Make space in your schedule for these favorites.

The Ryder Cup

The 2024 tournament will be held at Bethpage Black in New York, a popular venue with some thrilling golf to be played. This year promises to be an exciting one—24 of the best American golfers going head to head with 24 of the best European golfers, in 2024!

As victories go, the US has come out on top more often. But it’s always a hard-fought event and who knows… Maybe we’ll witness something amazing this year!

The Arnold Palmer Invitational

This invitational is rife with the world’s best talent and of course, it’s a much-loved tournament with a big name behind it. It’s not one of the biggest purses, but it’s a must-see if you’re a golf fan. As usual, the 2024 tournament will be held at the Palmer-owned Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Florida, USA.

Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship (January 18 to 21)

This Rolex series event is played in the desert, but you’d never say so! Featuring top golfers and held on Yas Links Abu Dhabi, this is one of the earliest tournaments of the year and a great way to kick off the golfing schedule.

Presidents Cup (September 28 to Oct 6)

One of the most interesting parts of this tournament is that it’s held at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Quebec, which is officially known as the oldest golf club in North America. 2023 saw it celebrate its 150t birthday, and 2024 will be yet another superb year with the Presidents Cup taking place on its fairways in September.

The Solheim Cup (September 18 to 22)

Coming along every 2nd year, the Solheim Cup is an exciting showdown between the 12 top American female golfers and their 12 best European counterparts. Mark your calendars, because you’ll want to watch every second!

Players to Watch in 2024

We all have our favorites! But certain players are looking pretty good for the 2024 season, and we can expect great results from them. Of course, there’ll always be the wildcard who comes out of the woodwork, which is what makes things truly exciting!

Major Contenders to Watch

  • Jon Rahm: Reigning Masters champ, and favorite to win again! Strong contender in all four majors, and every other tournament he plays.
  • Collin Morikawa: He’s back with a new coach and on the up-and-up. 2023 may not have been a cracking year for him, but don’t count Morikawa out.
  • Rory McIlroy: He may be one of the older players, but this four-time major winner is still going strong! Don’t underestimate him—there’s still more in that tank.
  • Viktor Hovland: After possibly the best year of his career, Hovland will be coming into 2024 hungry for more. We could see his first major title this year.

Players to Watch for a Major Breakthrough

  • Adrian Meronk: The Polish golfer is a powerful hitter and has few weak spots. He’s been playing well and could be ready for a huge breakthrough in 2024.
  • Nicolai Hojgaard: He may be young, but Hojgaard already has some big wins under his belt. He’s also got mounds of confidence to back up his talent, so we could see something special from him this year.
  • Ryan Fox: A bit of a wildcard, the New Zealander has 17 professional wins to his name. He’s a strong player who could surprise everyone in 2024.

Rising Stars to Keep an Eye On

  • Tom Kim: The young South Korean golfer has been hailed as one of the most exciting players to watch. He plays an entertaining game and has plenty of skill behind him too.
  • Ludvig Aberg: After turning pro in June 2023, Aberg scored victories on both the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour. The 2024 Masters will be his first major championship appearance.
  • Cameron Young: With a few good wins and a couple of masters tournaments behind him, Young will be raring to go this year.

Female Talent to Follow

  • Lilia Vu: Vu took over top spot in August 2023 and will be keen to stay there! She’ll be a force to be reckoned with this year.
  • Nelly Korda: Despite multiple health issues over the past few years, Korda’s indomitable spirit is always a threat on the course!
  • Atthaya Thitikul: This youngster is already well-known on the ladies’ circuit. Her latest achievement is the Vare Trophy for the lowest scoring average on the LPGA Tour.
  • Brooke Henderson: Canada’s favorite daughter and 3x winner of the Canadian Press’ female athlete of the year, we look forward to seeing what Henderson brings to the table this year.
  • Celine Boutier: Known to have one of the best short games in golf, she’s an exciting player with multiple wins to her name already.

Conclusion

Golf fans, save the dates. Non-golfers, this year promises some of the best action we’ve ever seen, so now’s the time to get in on it! You don’t need a launch monitor to see that 2024 is shaping up to be an exciting one and we can’t wait to see who surprises us.
