European Streaming Services: is there anything like Netflix in Europe?

When you talk about video streaming, top of mind is Netflix. Not to be outdone, there are also video streaming services in Europe. In fact, in 2018, the European Commission passed a law that makes it mandatory for streaming services to have at least 30% European content. And how best to know which shows to watch? You can check out TheVore.

Here are some VOD streaming services that are available in Europe.

MUBI

If you are a cinephile, you will enjoy content from MUBI. MUBI curates a variety of films that you may only catch during film festivals. You get indie films, cult, and classics from MUBI. Subscription rates start at GBP 1 for the first 3 months and go up to GBP 7.99, which is the regular monthly rate.

Every content available is in HD. For travellers and commuters who may not have a stable internet connection, content can be downloaded on iOS and Android phones and stored for a week. The only fly in the ointment is that, if you are looking for the average Hollywood blockbuster, MUBI is not the place where you can find it.

Acorn.tv

American company RLJ Entertainment is the owner of Acorn.tv, a video streaming service that gives you your fix of British shows, as well as shows from Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Mexico, and Spain. You can follow dramas like Delicious, Agatha Raisin, Manhunt, or mysteries/detective dramas like Line of Duty, No Offence, and Midsomer Murders, or comedies like Detectorists.

Then you get Australian shows like Janet King, A Place to Call Home, Jack Irish, Doctor Doctor, and East of Everything. The base rate of USD 6 per month or USD 60 a year is quite affordable and reasonable. You can stream your favorite shows through Acorn.tv through Amazon Fire TV, Roku, and Apple TV. If you are already subscribed to Amazon Prime, you just add USD 5 per month to get Acorn.tv.

BritBox

The BBC and ITV plc launched BritBox in March 2017 in the US, then in Canada in February 2018, and November 2019 in the UK. Since its launch, it has around 650,000 subscribers from the US and Canada. It boasts of having niche British content, past and current films and TV series.

It has popular shows in its roster like Emmerdale, EastEnders, and Coronation Street, and subscribers get them hot off the press, just a few hours after the actual broadcast. Created to compete with Netflix, BritBox offers exclusively British content for USD 7 a month or USD 70 a year.

They have also expanded their services to film and TV production and distribution. The only catch would be, depending on the domestic rights of BritBox, it may or may not have select content available in some territories. UK subscribers can watch BritBox even when out of the UK, as long as they are in Europe. Ditto for US and Canadian subscribers; they can only use BritBox within the US and Canada but not if they leave the continent.
