We all need a reason to smile in 2020, so BTS has us covered. Here's why you should check out their new mobile game.

BTS is saving 2020 with their new mobile game ‘BTS Universe Story’

Fans of BTS are no stranger to the overarching story in BTS’ music videos. Playing fictionalized versions of themselves throughout their music videos, BTS has carried their story into 2020. Now, fans can write the story themselves with BTS Universe Story.

The new mobile game from BTS dropped on September 24th, 2020 for fans to download to their phones. Based in the BTS Universe, the new app follows similar “story choice” games like Choices & Episode. You have a linear story you can alter based on the choices you make for your characters.

No surprise, the ARMY ate up the app day one. While we’ve gotten some top-tier meme material from BTS Universe Story, it’s clear BTS is here to give us a smile in the killer year that is 2020.

Self-insert fanfiction with a twist

We’re past the days of Y/N stories on Wattpad. Now, you don’t play yourself in BTS Universe Story: you play one of the boys. Whether you choose to follow a pre-set story and make choices to alter it, or write your own original story in “Story Creation” mode, you get to write BTS’s story.

It’s a really unique way for BTS to allow their fans to interact with them on an intimate level. Sure, you’re bound to have some fans acting out their shipping fantasies in the app, but the “Story Creation” mode allows ARMY members invested in the fictional BTS universe to act out their own stories.

Style icons, even digitally

Since the game is still about BTS, the 3D character models are as life-like as they can get. But of course, to truly be “life-like”, the in-game characters need to be as fashionable as they come.

Enter the “Collection”. Essentially a digital closet, players can unlock outfits with in-game currency to customize their avatars. There’s even special missions you can accomplish to unlock specific outfits. Whether you want to recreate iconic outfits, or give the boys a new style, the Collection allows players to truly feel like they’re a part of the story.

Interact with the rest of the ARMY

2020 has not been kind for social interaction, so the BTS Universe Story app allows for interactions between other players. With how large the ARMY is, there will be plenty of user-generated stories for you to play through after you finish the prologue story. You can share your favorite stories with friends, and even create your own to share with the world.

Plus, you can use the Collection feature to take AR (augmented reality) photos with your avatars to share on social media. While there’s no true communication aspect to BTS Universe Story, it’s still a great way to share your content with others through the custom story-making mode.

Just a lot of fun

Really, the game isn’t anything special. It’s not innovating the story game genre, or the mobile game market as a whole. But BTS Universe Story is something fun for ARMY members alike to enjoy, to celebrate the band they love dearly.

We all need a reason to smile in 2020, and for some people, that smile is going to be from playing BTS Universe Story. Really, that’s the intended purpose of the game, and we can’t wait to see what everyone creates on the app.
