When Kim Bass was seven years old, his grandfather came to his family’s Bleecker Street apartment in Utica and brought him to the Uptown Theater on Genesee Street, back when the theater still screened movies.
Bass still remembers every detail of sitting in the center of the theater with his grandfather watching Disney’s “Miracle of the White Stallion, ” including the kind of candy he bought — a box of Good & Plenty’s.
“When I got home that night I told my mom I wanted to do that,” Bass said. “That dream never left me.”
Now, the screenwriter and director’s latest film, “Tyson’s Run,” premiers nationwide March 11.

Bass, 66, was born in Utica and lived there until he was around 7 or 8 before moving to nearby Frankfort. But the city has always stayed with him. His next film, “HeadShop,” was partly inspired by Liberty Street in the 1960s, he said.
But Bass said the inspiration for “Tyson’s Run” came from speaking with a boy in his son’s elementary school class who didn’t want to run with the other students.
“He told me, ‘I know I’m fast, but all the other boys are super fast. So I don’t want to run anymore,'” he said.

Out of that grew an idea for a film about a 15-year-old boy with autism, Tyson, who becomes inspired to run a marathon after attending public school for the first time, where his father is the football coach.
“Thinking if he becomes some kind of champion of something, his mother and father will have a better relationship and his family will be healed,” Bass said, later adding, “He thinks that’s the way to communicate with his father.”
The cast includes Amy Smart (“The Butterfly Effect,” “Just Friends”) and Rory Cochrane (“Argo,” “CSI Miami”) as Tyson’s parents, Barkhad Abdi (“Captain Phillips,” “Blade Runner 2049”) as his mentor, Claudia Zevallos as his Spanish teacher, Layla Felder as a girl who befriends him, Reno Wilson as the city mayor, and Major Dodson (“The Walking Dead,” “American Horror Story”) starring as Tyson.
Dodson himself is autistic, and has advocated for autistic characters being played by autistic actors. But Bass said he didn’t know Dodson had autism when he was chosen.
“He was cast based on having done an unbelievably great job,” he said.
Bass said that, while the story centers on a character with autism, the themes are universal, and it didn’t change how he wrote the challenges the family faces.
“This is just an ordinary family,” he said. “It’s about faith, it’s about love, it’s about forgiveness.”
Bass may be best known for his contributions to 1990s comedy television. After a stint acting overseas (including filming in Hong Kong for Jackie Chan’s 1985 movie “The Protector”) and screenwriting in Hollywood, Bass got into the Warner Brothers Writers’ Workshop, he said. He was brought on as a writer for the sketch comedy series “In Living Color,” and went on to create the sitcoms “Sister, Sister” and “Kenan and Kel.”

Bass said there wasn’t much of a transition from comedic television writing to a more dramatic film like “Tyson’s Run.”
“I’m very eclectic in my storytelling. I like all kinds of stories,” he said, later adding. “It’s not sort of one track for me. It’s a story that speaks for me.”
Filming for “Tyson’s Run” started about three years ago in Atlanta, Georgia, but it was held back by more than a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bass said he didn’t want to release the film on streaming sites — that it was important viewers had that same sort of experience he first had as a child in Utica.
“This is the kind of picture that should be on the big screen and shared,” he said.
