Kevin Stefanski, Joel Bitonio and KhaDarel Hodge, and Ronnie Harrison will miss Sunday’s game after testing positive for the coronavirus. Olivier Vernon will also miss the game after the team put him on IR with an Achilles injury.

The Browns activated B.J. Goodson off the reserve/COVID-19 list this week. The team is still waiting to see if Denzel Ward, Andrew Sendejo, Harrison Bryant, and Malcolm Smith will be cleared to play.

The Cleveland Browns will take on the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, Jan. 10, 2021, at 8:15 p.m. EST at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Matchup

  • The Browns hold the No. 6 seed after finishing the regular season with a 11-5 record. The Steelers are the No. 3 seed following a 12-4 season and AFC North title.
  • The Steelers lead the all-time series, 77-60-1. The Browns won last week’s meeting, 24-22, at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Matchups to Watch

  • Browns CBs vs. Steelers WRs — It’s hard to find a team with a deeper group of pass-catchers than the Steelers, and the Browns are short-handed in the defensive backfield.
  • Browns OTs vs. Steelers pass rush — Pittsburgh led the NFL with 56 sacks, including four against the Browns last week.
  • Browns run game vs. Steelers D — Cleveland amassed 192 yards on the ground in last week’s matchup.

How the Browns and Steelers got here

The Pittsburgh Steelers started 2020 the season with an 11-0 record for the first time in franchise history. Ben Roethlisberger was playing clean following his return from injury, on a 16-game pace for 4,073 passing yards 36 TDs, and 9 INTs through those first 11 games.

This defensive unit (despite losing key players Bud Dupree and Devin Bush to ACL tears) held opposing teams to just 312 points on the season (third-fewest) while generating 27 turnovers (2nd) and leading the league with 56 sacks.

Following their hot start, the team went on a 1-4 tear to close out the season and will look for a get-right game against their divisional rivals.

Cleveland fans certainly have reason to rejoice. The Browns have secured their first playoff berth since 2002, when they lost to, interestingly enough… the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card round.

Steelers vs Browns Prediction

Under the leadership of first-year HC Kevin Stefanski, the team finished 11-5, their first winning season since 2007. The team found a big-time spark after a Week 9 bye, finishing out Weeks 10-17 averaging 25.3 points and 392 scrimmage yards per game with just six total turnovers (t2nd-fewest).

QB Baker Mayfield shined as Stefanski established the run and alleviated some of the pressure from the former Heisman winner.

The Steelers have played and beat the Browns twice in the post-season, each time with home-field advantage.

If this were Madden, the (12-4) Steelers’ overall team rating would jump from 74 back up to a healthy 85. The (11-5) Browns should also get several key players back though some specifics still remain unclear.

What is certain is that Cleveland won’t have coach Kevin Stefanski available on game day. Special teams coordinator Mike Priefer will serve as interim head coach while offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt will call plays.

And that is the crux of what makes evaluating Cleveland’s 24-22 Week 17 victory challenging.

Final Thought

I picked a photo of Myles Garrett staring down the line at Mason Rudolph to lead this preview in hopes of swiftly addressing the obvious surrounding what will be different between Browns-Steelers round three.

The Browns defense won’t face Rudolph next week. Instead, a quarterback 13 years older than him in Ben Roethlisberger returns after resting in Pittsburgh on Sunday. Pro Bowl center Maurkice Pouncey will play along with defensive stars T.J. Watt and Cam Heyward.
