What’s with the fuss about ‘TharnType?’ Our beginners guide

The true victor in terms of television through the 2010s is the rise in the popularity of Asian dramas. From the domination of K-pop to bingewatching the latest J-drama, there is just a bounty of content from the East for audiences to feast their eyes (and ears) on. As a push for more inclusivity and diversity comes from around the world, these dramas are no exception.

We’ve previously covered Guardian on Film Daily, which is a very LGBT+ coded show despite the censorship laws in China. Now, it’s time to introduce you to TharnType: The Series, which is much more openly LGBT+. TharnType is a 2019 television series from Thailand (T-drama?), which is taking the world of lovers of Asian drama by storm.

Here’s everything we know about TharnType: The Series for the curious.

What is TharnType: The Series about?

Type (Gulf Kanawut Traipipattanapong) is a handsome college freshman, who is homophobic due to being molested by a man as a child. His life is turned upside down when he meets his roommate, Tharn (Mew Suppasit Jongcheveevat), who is openly gay. As the series synopsis asks, “With a gay guy and a guy who hates gay men, that have to share a small space together for the rest of the year – what can possibly be the outcome of their story? Hatred? Or maybe love?”

TharnType is basically a romantic Odd Couple scenario. Type & Tharn need to learn & grow with each other over the course of the series. It looks like, in the end, the pair will be able to be together. They just need to grow as people before it happens.

So do Tharn & Type kiss?

Yes, Tharn & Type kiss quite a bit in TharnType, which began airing in October. Yes, Type has some deep-rooted trauma in his past molestation, but his character arc comes from a) learning that not everyone in the LGBT+ community is like that and b) accepting the part of himself that likes Tharn quite a bit.

TharnType explores dealing with past trauma and taking those first steps in a relationship. The chemistry between Gulf Kanawut Traipipattanapong and Mew Suppasit Jongcheveevat is absolutely electric, which is definitely critical in a romance series. You definitely believe in their burgeoning relationship from the explosive moments to the quieter, more intimate ones.

So if you like a whole enemy (kind of) to lovers dynamic mixed with the Odd Couple plus some excellent comedy? This is definitely the series for you to check out going forward.
