The Masters Tournament is one of the four major professional golf championships held each year in the first whole week of April. The U.S. Masters takes place at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, with the champion taking home a green jacket.

The Masters 2022 is being broadcast on CBS and ESPN (in the U.S.). Golfing fans across the world will turn their attention to Augusta this week as The Masters gets underway.

The year’s first major has been dominated by speculation surrounding the return of Tiger Woods, who is set to make his first competitive appearance since a near-fatal car crash last year.

Hideki Matsuyama defends the Green Jacket but Jon Rahm is still considered the favorite heading into the tournament, while new world No 1 Scottie Scheffler has won three of the past five events he’s entered.

Cameron Smith is also considered a strong candidate to claim a maiden Green Jacket after winning the Players Championship earlier this year. The Australian boasts a fantastic record at Augusta, with three top-10 finishes in his last four appearances.

Will Tiger Woods play in The Masters?

The big question for every golf fan in the build-up to The Masters 2022 — bigger even than who will win — is will Tiger Woods play?

Woods was in a car accident in February 2021 that severely injured him. For a while, it was questionable if he would ever be able to play golf again, let alone on a professional level. In December 2021 he played in a father-son exhibition tournament with his son Charlie Woods, but he has not played in a professional event since the 2020 Masters.

However, that may all change this week. As a past Masters champion, Woods is invited to play in the tournament every year, with him having the option to decline if he is unable. Incredibly, just about 14 months after his accident, he is working to play at The Masters 2022.

Woods had a practice round at the famed golf course the week before The Masters and is doing more prep in the days ahead of the tournament. He has said that whether or not he plays in The Masters will be a “game-time decision(opens in new tab);” Woods can wait until just before his scheduled tee time on Thursday to make the call.

Fellow golfer Fred Couples, who played with Woods in a practice round on Monday, April 4, said that he believes Woods is on pace to play in The Masters(opens in new tab).

Why is Phil Mickelson not playing in The Masters?

One big name not participating in The Masters this year is Phil Mickelson. The two-time Master’s winner is taking a break from professional golf after he was heavily criticized for comments he made about Saudis that he had been working with to possibly form a Saudi Golf League with the goal of rivaling the PGA Tour.

His comments lost him several of his largest sponsors and had the golfer post a statement saying he needed to take time off from golf to “work on being the man I want to be(opens in new tab).”
