The comedy from the director of Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums debuted at the Cannes Film Festival today, and early reactions are glowing: “a delectable tribute to journalism,” wrote one viewer on Twitter, saying the film “packs so many intricate and eccentric details into the milieu of ennui-sur-blasé that it’s almost overwhelming (not in a bad way).”

Take a deep breath, because this cast might just blow you away. Stars featured in The French Dispatch include Timothée Chalamet, Frances McDormand, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Benicio del Toro, Adrien Brody, Léa Seydoux, Owen Wilson, Saoirse Ronan, Jeffrey Wright, and Elisabeth Moss. That cast should be enough to allure you to the film, but we’ll give you a hint at the plot just to secure your excitement. Anderson’s film follows a 20th century Kansas journalism outpost located in France, inspired by Anderson’s love of The New Yorker.
The French Dispatch release date: When is it out in cinemas?
The French Dispatch is set to land in UK and US cinemas on 22nd October 2021.
The film was originally meant to be released on 24th July 2020 but, like many highly anticipated 2020 releases, suffered significant delays due to COVID-19.
WILL THE FRENCH DISPATCH BE ON HBO MAX?
No. The French Dispatch is being released by Searchlight Pictures, not by Warner Bros. In 2021, HBO Max—which is a Warner Media company—has been the streaming home for Warner Bros. movies like Dune during their theatrical release. But it will not be the streaming home for The French Dispatch. While it’s possible The French Dispatch will be on HBO Max someday, it won’t be until after the movie is released on VOD.
WHEN WILL THE FRENCH DISPATCH BE ON STREAMING?
A digital release date for The French Dispatch has not yet been announced, and it’s hard to say when The French Dispatch will be available to buy and rent on VOD.
The French Dispatch is a Searchlight Pictures film, a studio that has not had a consistent release strategy during the pandemic. The last Searchlight movie to release in theaters, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, came to theaters on September 17 and will be available to buy on digital beginning on November 2.
That is about a 45-day theatrical window, the new window many studios are adhering to. If The French Dispatch follows a similar release strategy, it might be available to rent on VOD around the third week of December.
The French Dispatch cast
Wes Anderson is all about going big or going home when it comes to aesthetics, quirkiness, and cast, and The French Dispatch certainly delivers on the latter.
Bill Murray plays the editor of the fictional titular newspaper, and he is joined by a host of savvy journalists and the subjects they encounter. These are played by Benicio del Toro, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Bond girl Léa Seydoux, Frances McDormand, imothée Chalamet, Owen Wilson, Liev Schreiber, Elisabeth Moss, Edward Norton, William Dafoe, Saoirse Ronan, Rupert Friend, Henry Winkler, and Anjelica Huston.
As if that weren’t enough to stomach, the film will also feature other noteworthy stars in undisclosed roles: Fisher Stevens, Kate Winslet, and Alex Lawther.
Wes Anderson directs, produces, writes the screenplay, and devises the story.
The French Dispatch plot: What is it about?
The film is set in the 20th century and evolves around the eponymous The French Dispatch, a newspaper inspired by The New Yorker which operates in the fictional French town of Ennui-sure-Blasé.
Instead of following one story, the film features an anthology of intertwining short stories following the many characters that work for the newspaper and the people they encounter.
“It is more a portrait of this man, of this journalist who fights to write what he wants to write. It’s not a movie about freedom of the press, but when you talk about reporters you also talk about what’s going on in the real world,” Anderson added.
The French Dispatch Ending & Every Magazine Section Meaning Explained
The French Dispatch ending cements Wes Anderson’s tribute to journalism of days past. The narrative structure didn’t land with all film critics, but others celebrated Anderson’s ingenuity in truly capturing the big-screen feeling of a 1960s-era magazine issue.
This isn’t the first movie in which Wes Anderson has paid tribute to certain media types and pursuits of past eras, such as his critically divisive 2004 film The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, serving as a love letter to oceanography and the work of Jacques Cousteau.
Anderson has been described as one of the most literary directors in the modern film landscape, so it’s no surprise The French Dispatch takes on the most literary structure of his films since 2001’s The Royal Tenenbaums.
The 2021 movie has also been described by critics and fans as the most Wes Anderson movie to date; however cliché the description is, it’s not incorrect. The French Dispatch is Wes Anderson at his most nostalgic, his most technically enhanced, and the quirkiest conception of his characters.
