After a very long wait, the newest Spiderman movie from Marvel/Disney is finally about to be released! Spider-Man: No Way Home is set to hit theatres on December 17th, 2021, and fans. Are. Hyped! Tickets have sold out at theatres across the United States, and comic book nerds everywhere are anticipating this latest release.

The production history: Sony vs. Disney

Sony, through Columbia Pictures, had the filming rights to the character Spider-Man. When the company’s systems were hacked in late 2014, emails were leaked, showing that Sony wanted Marvel/Disney to work on some new Spider-Man movies. They wanted to have control over the production, but they couldn’t come to an agreement, and so, Sony set out to make their own Spider-Man films.

But then, things changed. A year later, Sony & Disney announced they were going to team up on a Spider-Man movie, and the character would be integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony would get their wish, having the final say on the movie creatively, and financing the project their way. This resulted in the first Spider-Man MCU movie: Spider-Man: Homecoming, which was released in 2017.

Spider-Man: Far From Home came next, in 2019 (a release window that Sony insisted on, much to Disney’s disagreement). But before that, in 2018, Sony lead production on a movie on Spider-Man’s nemesis, resulting in Venom coming out that year. They had wanted a Venom movie since their original Spider-Man trilogy in the early 2000s and had tried again with the two The Amazing Spider-Man films as well. Now, it was here.

But by then, relations between Sony & Disney were breaking down. Sony wanted more films under the same terms, but Disney refused. Sony decided to break away entirely, announcing their own Spider-Man films separate from Marvel (the Sony’s Spider-Man Universe). Fans reacted extremely negatively to this, resulting in higher-ups from the two companies sitting down to negotiate further.

By the end of 2019, they had reached a new agreement and were back to working together again. And so, production on Spider-Man: No Way Home began . . . and now, it’s finally coming out. A multiverse precedent: Into the Spider-Verse

Spider-Man: No Way Home is set to guide us on a journey through the Spider-Man multiverse. But it has big shoes to fill, mainly in the form of a previous film that came out. And that film is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, a movie that takes different spider superheroes from across the dimensions, and brings them together to fight evil.

Now, the Spider-Man multiverse was not a new concept. It had been played with many times in the original comics and was even depicted in a few video games (mainly Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions & Spider-Man: Edge Of Time). But Into the Spider-Verse took things to a whole new level, at a time when people weren’t expecting much from Sony Pictures Animation.

After all, the company had just released The Emoji Movie in 2017, a film that was critically panned. But Amy Pascal (Sony’s co-chairman) wanted an animated Spider-Man movie from Phil Lord & Christopher Miller, who had worked on numerous animated films before (including for Sony Pictures Animation). They agreed if they could use Dan Slott’s 2014 storyline in the comics, about the “Spider-Verse”.

And so, the film was put into production. Lord & Miller helped develop the project, and the movie had three directors: Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman. What came out of it is one of the most vibrant animated films in recent memory, with a fun & exciting story about traveling through dimensions, meeting alternate versions of your superhero self, and finding your center in the midst of villainy.

Into the Spider-Verse beautifully presented its core concept & characters, resulting in acclaim from audiences & critics. People love this movie, and a recent teaser for its sequel absolutely exploded on social media.
