Spider-Man: No Way Home, the final installment in the
wall crawler’s MCU trilogy developed by Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, finally has an official trailer.
That’s right, after months of waiting (and plenty of speculation about when it would arrive), we’ve received our first look at the forthcoming movie starring Tom Holland – and it looks like a spectacularly wild ride.
After a period where it looked like Sony and Disney might have ended their ongoing collaboration, everyone’s favorite web-slinger will be returning in what’s set to be the most ambitious movie in the series yet.
You can check out the film’s first trailer below but, that aside, what else do we know about Spider-Man: No Way Home? As you read on, you’ll see more information on the film’s cast, potential plot points, other prominent leaks, and what we’d like to see as part of the Marvel Phase 4 flick.
Spider-Man: No Way Home Come Out?
Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theaters everywhere on Friday, Dec. 17 (the same day that Season 2 of The Witcher premieres on Netflix). Like every other blockbuster released over the last year-and-a-half, the film was postponed more than once by the theatrical and box office uncertainty stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Originally penciled in for summer 2021, No Way Home was first delayed to Nov. 5, 2021, before Sony Pictures settled on the final date of Dec. 17, 2021. As a result, it’ll be right in the middle of that Christmas sweet spot when everyone is on break and free to visit their local movie theater.
Will Spider-Man: No Way Home be on Disney+?
If you were hoping to skip the theaters and watch Spider-Man: No Way Home at home, you might have to wait a while. Like several other MCU films, Spider-Man: No Way Home will have an exclusive theatrical release.
While previous releases like Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home haven’t been available to stream on Disney+, it seems like Spider-Man: No Way Home will eventually make its way to the streaming service.
In April, it was announced that a new licensing deal with Disney+ and Sony Pictures will bring all of Sony’s Tom Holland-starring Spider-Man films, both old and future, to Disney+. The deal begins in 2022 and runs through Sony’s 2026 theatrical slate.
Is Spider-Man: No Way Home On HBO MAX?
No. Spider-Man: No Way Home is a Netflix movie, not a Warner Bros. movie, and therefore will not be streaming on HBO Max when it opens in theaters.
While HBO Max—which is owned by Warner Media—has been the streaming home for Warner Bros. movies like The Suicide Squad, it will not be the streaming home for MGM movies like Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Spider-Man: No Way Home Cast
If you’ve spent any of the last few months on the internet, you know that this is where things get interesting. Some cast members are guaranteed to reappear: obviously, Tom Holland will return as Peter Parker, joined by his love interest MJ (Zendaya) and best friend Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon).
Other returning faces include the Spider-Man-obsessed yet Peter Parker hater Flash Thompson (Tony Revolori), Peter’s fierce Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), her brief love interest Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau), and Ned’s now ex-girlfriend Betty Bryant (Angourie Rice).
An MCU alum but Spider-Man movie first-timer, Benedict Cumberbatch is expected to make an appearance as Dr. Stephen Strange. This should come as no surprise to MCU fans, especially those keeping up with WandaVision and Loki — it seems that questions of time, magic, and the multiverse will be a major element throughout Phase 4. With his upcoming Multiverse of Madness movie, Dr. Strange may tie the many stories together.
Speaking of the multiverse, rumor has it that past Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield may swing by. Both actors have donned the webbed mask before, in previous iterations of the hero. Though they have ignored and denied these rumors respectively, it’s hard to take their word at face value.
The reappearance of JK Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson, reprising his role from the Raimi-Maguire trilogy, indicates otherwise. Adding on is the return of Alfred Molina as Dr. Otto Ovtavius from the Raimi trilogy and Jamie Foxx as Electro from the Amazing Spider-Man films. If the villains can return, what’s stopping their web-swinging nemeses? Let’s just say our spider senses are tingling…
Spider-Man: No Way Home plot
In the aftermath of Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter is suspected of Mysterio’s murder, and the whole world knows he’s secretly Spidey. He goes to Doctor Strange for help, but the spell goes wrong, which seems to open the door to the multiverse – and a whole host of supervillains.
The official plot synopsis reads: “For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero is unmasked and no longer able to separate his normal life from the high-stakes of being a Super Hero. When he asks for help from Doctor Strange the stakes become even more dangerous, forcing him to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.”
Plenty of other details on the movie has hit the internet, too, which help to fill out the picture even more. Tom Holland previously teased what’s on the cards for Peter’s love life: “As to the relationship between Peter and MJ, I’m not too sure what it will be.
