What's going to happen to 'Outlander', a show renowned for its explicit (and often very arousing) sex scenes after COVID-19? Let's find out.

RIP sex scenes in ‘Outlander’: Deposit these in your sp*nk b*nk

What happens to Outlander, a show renowned for its explicit (and often very arousing) sex scenes, after a year of COVID-19 restrictions with no end in sight? How do you shoot sequences involving intertwined naked bodies and heavy breathing while adhering to social distancing and other coronavirus prevention guidelines? Can fictional 18th-century lovemaking prevail over a 21st-century disease?

Uncertainty & hope

Here’s the deal: it’s almost impossible to imagine a sex-free Outlander. Those steamy sex scenes have been such a vital part of the show’s identity, and removing them would almost certainly diminish its appeal. Of course, the health of the cast & crew must remain top priority, which is why safety procedures have been developed for all shows going back into production.

Thankfully, leading man Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie Fraser, seems to agree that Outlander sex scenes are vital. In a recent appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan, Heughan stated he hoped the upcoming sixth season would still have sex scenes. “It’s an integral part of our show”, he said, hinting that the production team is on the same wavelength as Outlander fans.

Heughan’s expressed desire for Outlander season 6 sex scenes isn’t the decisive confirmation we wanted to hear, but it’s better than nothing.

They call it Droughtlander

Even if Outlander’s sexiness level isn’t altered by the current pandemic, COVID has already had an effect on the show. Production of the sixth season was postponed, its latest start date now early 2021. The delay is a major disruption, considering the original shoot was scheduled for this summer. We might not get new episodes until 2022, depending on how production goes.

Difficult times like these remind us to be grateful five seasons worth of Jamie & Clare adventures (sexual & otherwise) are archived online. To endure the endless wait until we get these characters back, try rewatching alluring Outlander moments. Sure, you could also read (or reread) the books, but sometimes we just want to watch extremely attractive people get it on as part of a really good TV period drama.

Here’s a list of super-hot Outlander moments to help you out whenever you’re feeling nostalgic. We organized the sex scenes chronologically because, honestly, their overall sexiness ranking can change minute-to-minute depending on what turns you on.

Wedding (season 1, episode 7)

You never forget your first time, and we’ll never forget Jamie’s. After Jamie & Claire are wed in Outlander season 1, we witness the consummation. Jamie’s a virgin when he has sex with Clare for the first time, and we get to see our two protagonists be intimate for the first of many encounters to come.

Both sides now (season 1, episode 8)

Outside sex! They didn’t even take most of their clothes off for this one. During the passionate outdoor sex scene, the classic Jamie line, “Does it ever stop, the wanting you?” came to be, and millions around the world fell even harder for him.

La dame blanche (season 2, episode 4)

For serious plot-related reasons, Outlander season 2 didn’t feature as many sex scenes as the previous. However, the scarity of sex scenes only made them hit even harder. For example, when Jamie finally opens up to Clare about the trauma he suffered at the hands of Black Jack Randall, they finally reconnect, sexually & emotionally.

Dragonfly in amber (season 2, episode 13)

Few things are hotter than goodbye sex, and that’s what we’re treated with in the Outlander season 2 finale when Jamie & Clare part ways – seemingly forever. Clare’s about to go back to her original time, Jamie’s about to go into battle, and odds are they’ll never see each other again. So they get down to business at the foot of the magical stones.

A.Malcolm (season 3, episode 6)

Remember goodbye sex? Well, then there’s reunion sex, and it’s just as hot. Two decades spent apart (only six episodes for us, but they felt just as long), Jamie & Clare are finally together again. Thus, an inevitable sex marathon ensues, one in which Clare instructs her lover not to be gentle. Her soreness the next morning indicates Jamie complied.

Eye of the storm (season 3, episode 13)

Dirty talk on a boat. Outlander writers can’t be accused of not keeping the show lively. Because it’s Outlander, the hot scene obviously goes beyond kinky wordplay, but honestly, Jamie’s Scottish accent might be enough to get you going.

Blood of my blood (season 4, episode 6)

Outlander season 4 also deprives us of sex scenes a little bit, because so many new characters and plot points are introduced. However, that doesn’t mean we don’t see some steamy emotions between Clare & Jamie, especially when Jamie surprises her in the bathtub with a new ring to replace the one she loses earlier in the season. The gift leads to post-bath sex, which is what we were all hoping for.

Wilmington (season 4, episode 8)

Let’s mix things up a bit. Clare & Jamie are not the only couple doing the deed in Outlander, and one of the most memorable scenes in season 4 has nothing to do with their relationship. We’re talking about Brianna & Roger finally succumbing to their passion, another important first in the series – a moment absolutely cementing the pair as soulmates.

Journeycake (season 5, episode 11)

Let’s bring this list to a close with another classic: window sex. Window oral sex, even. The scene starts with Clare putting on arousing perfume before sadly finding Jamie fast asleep, but when Jamie eventually wakes up it quickly turns into a great time. May we all find a partner so eager to make up for missed opportunities.
