Did the cast of 'Mrs. Doubtfire' reveal there's an X-rated cut of the beloved 90s classic? See why Twitter's abuzz about this beloved movie again.

Did the cast of ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ really make an NC-17 version of the film?

Millennials took to Twitter with fervor today when one of the most celebrated nostalgia gems of the 1990s started trending. The 2020s continue to surprise, as no one could have guessed one of the most revered family comedies of the 1990s would be a viral subject in 2021. The film we’re talking about, of course, is 1993’s cult cross-dressing comedy classic: Mrs. Doubtfire

The late, great Robin Williams solidified his position in history as one of Hollywood’s most beloved comic actors with his role in Mrs. Doubtfire. He earned a Golden Globe for his performance which was praised on & off the red carpet. Furthermore, the film itself became nothing short of legendary as the years rolled on, and the movie was increasingly nodded in other films & series, from Broad City to Arrested Development.

Comfort classic

Director Chris Columbus brought audiences Mrs. Doubtfire in 1993, and the film was one of many 90s box office smashes that quickly became classic comfort films for any kid growing up in the 90s.

Before Mrs. Doubtfire, Columbus started filling up his resume with classic hits like 1987’s Adventures in Babysitting, 1990’s Home Alone, and 1992’s Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. After Mrs. Doubtfire, he’d go on to get behind the camera for 1998’s heart-wrencher Stepmom before introducing the film world to Harry Potter when he directed the first two movies of the franchise.

Classic cast

Despite Columbus’s talent for well-rounded family films in the 1990s, the cast of Mrs. Doubtfire brought the film to a different level than Columbus had achieved thus far.

Audiences remember Robin Williams pulling more than his weight in the film taking double duty as Mrs. Doubtfire & Daniel Hillard, but the rest of the cast of Mrs. Doubtfire is nothing to turn your nose up to.

Pierce Brosnan joined the cast of Mrs. Doubtfire just two years before his career took off with 007 fame, and Sally Field held it down as solid as ever as Hillard’s exhausted estranged wife.

What underscores Mrs. Doubtfire as a quintessential 90s movie, however, has something to do with the child stars of the film; Hillard’s kids are played by Mara Wilson (immortalized in the titular role in 1996’s Matilda), and unequivocal 90s heartthrob and Boy Meets World’s other Hunter brother Matthew Lawrence.

The cast of Mrs. Doubtfire helped the film earn the classic reputation it held for years, but why is Mrs. Doubtfire trending today? Twitter is buzzing with rumors the cast of Mrs. Doubtfire are featured in an NC-17 cut of the classic family comedy.

Lost cut

A simple keyword search on Twitter for “NC-17” today will yield nothing but results surrounding the cast of Mrs. Doubtfire and the viral news today saying there’s an alleged NC-17 cut of the classic movie. One has to wonder where all the buzz is suddenly coming from.

Nearly every tweet talking about the NC-17 cut of Mrs. Doubtfire featured a retweet of an account called @factsonfilm which told its followers Robin Williams improvised so much during the filming of Mrs. Doubtfire, there were PG-13, R, and NC-17 cuts of the classic film.

As Robin Williams was a known improvisation expert, the rumored info of other rated versions of Mrs. Doubtfire being out there is totally plausible and makes a lot of sense. However, are there any cold hard facts on the cast of Mrs. Doubtfire acting out an edgier version of their classic film?

Despite fans demanding to see the NC-17 cut of Mrs. Doubtfire, it’s hard to say if such a version even exists. The cast of Mrs. Doubtfire and its crew have yet to respond to the viral news about the movie. We can only hope if there is an NC-17 version of Mrs. Doubtfire out there, it’ll be released soon, and aged well (but we doubt it).
