Tits up! Is ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ coming back for S4?

Having emerged, bedraggled and bleary-eyed from our binge session of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s season 3, we only have one question. Will there be a season 4?

The Amazon Prime period comedy-drama The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel managed to steal our hearts in the way that only creator Amy Sherman-Palladino (Gilmore Girls) can. Following 1958 housewife Rachel Brosnahan as Miriam “Midge” Maisel, as she discovers that she’s better at stand-up comedy than her cheating husband, the series is delightful and witty, and we definitely need more of it.

Season 3 brings a change of scenery

Midge’s story continues in season 3 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as she goes on tour. Serving as the supporting act for singer Shy Baldwin (Leroy McClain), Midge takes her show on the road, performing at a casino in Las Vegas and then a hotel in Florida.

Back in New York, Midge’s parent’s struggle after Abe (Tony Shalhoub) leaves his job, and her former husband Joel (Michael Zegen) opens a nightclub in Chinatown. Midge’s manager, Susie (Alex Borstein), has a new client, Midge’s nemesis, Sophie Lennon (Jane Lynch). Lennon keeps Susie on her toes as she struggles to juggle two challenging clients.

Without giving anything away, we can tell you that the latest season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel ended with a serious cliffhanger.

So what’s the story with season 4?

Amazon has yet to greenlight The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel for a fourth season, but we’re not in panic mode yet. Since season 3 just came out, it’s a little early for news on season four, but this waiting period is new to Mrs. Maisel fans, as Amazon originally gave the show a two-season series order, then renewed it for a third season in May 2018 (several months ahead of season 2’s release).

However, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has a list of awards and nominations that would make any serious envious. While critical acclaim isn’t always enough to keep a show on the air, Sherman-Palladino herself said that the first four to five seasons have already been planned. Our money is on seasons 4 and 5 getting greenlit, maybe even both at once.

Although the pilot episode of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was released in March 2017, the rest of the first season dropped November 29, 2017. Seasons 2 and 3 were both released in the first week of December. Amazon’s release schedule for the series has been relatively consistent. We anticipate The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 4 will also debut in the first week of December 2020.

Any hints on season 4? (spoilers ahead)

Based on the ending of season 3, we expect season 4 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel to bring Midge back to New York. Honestly, we were horrified by her act at the Apollo, it’s the 1950’s for goodness sake. We expect some serious humble pie to be on Midge for season 4.

The fate of the Manhattan apartment is as undecided as to the fate of Midge’s career. Midge’s tour contract served as collateral, so we expect some serious scrambling. Perhaps even a desperate Midge needing to perform at Joel’s new club for her comeback.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Caroline Aaron (who plays Joel’s mom, Shirley) also hinted that season 4 might highlight the changing times.

“As we move into the ’60s, which we are going to do by the end of season 3, the world is going to certainly be pulled out from under Moishe (Kevin Pollak) and Shirley’s feet,” Caroline says. “The world they knew is going to be a very, very different world. Midge is going to bring that world into this family, and I would imagine it’s going to be hard for us. I don’t know that for sure, but all the rules are changing, and let’s see what that means.”

We can see the ’60s bringing a whole slew of new plotlines to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, so season 4 can’t get here fast enough.
