‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’: Will Chadwick Boseman’s legacy continue?

Marvel is returning to Wakanda next summer, as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever began production yesterday at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta, Georgia with a release date of July 8th, 2022 leaving a bittersweet taste for many fans. 

Though Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will spark the return of many of the beloved characters, Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa won’t be among them. Chadwick Boseman’s tragic death after a four-year battle with colon cancer makes this project more than a mere film; it makes it a powerful tribute to such a prolific actor and activist. 

This energy is definitely present both on the set and on the internet as many fans have voiced their bittersweet joy at the announcement on Twitter. A cultural sensation 

Black Panther was not only an amazing film, but was a cultural smash hit back in February 2018, shattering the antiquated Hollywood myth that films with a predominantly Black cast would not be commercially viable to international audiences. 

The film’s $1.34 billion dollar box office worldwide definitely dissuaded many of that notion, making Black Panther Marvel’s highest-grossing non-Avengers film of all time. This feat didn’t go unnoticed, as the film was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won Oscars for score, costume design, and production design. 

Though all of these incredible behind-the-scenes feats are very much earned, it was the actors who really helped make this story as powerful as it was, with Chadwick Boseman bringing powerful, regal energy to the role of T’Challa. An energy that is, unfortunately, sorely missed on the set of the film’s sequel. 

Make him proud 

Kevin Feige, the Marvel Studio’s chief, commented on Chadwick Boseman’s tragic absence on the set of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever during a Black Widow Global Fan Event in Los Angeles yesterday, stating how “It’s clearly very emotional without Chad. But everyone is also very excited to bring the world of Wakanda back to the public and back to the fans. We’re going to do it in a way that would make Chad proud.”

This wasn’t the first sentiment about Boseman’s absence that was stated to Variety and other outlets. Director Ryan Coogler said that this process was “the hardest thing” he’d ever done in his professional career. 

He added that “I’m incredibly sad to lose Boseman, but I’m also incredibly motivated that I got to spend time with him. He’s one of those people who, you spend your life hearing about people like this…For this individual, who’s an ancestor now, I was there for it… It’s such an incredible privilege that fills you up as much as it knocks you down.”
