The three-hour broadcast, hosted by Roker, Savannah Guthrie, and Hoda Kotb, begins at 9 a.m. in every time zone on NBC and ends at noon. Telemundo will simulcast the parade in Spanish, with the broadcast hosted by En Casa con Telemundo’s Ana Jurka and Carlos Adyan, accompanied by Freddy Lomelí.

The parade will also be streamed on NBC’s website and on the NBC app, but you’ll need a TV provider to get access. NBC will air an encore of the parade from 2-5 p.m. ET.

what’s the history of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade?

Since 1924, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has been quintessential in celebrating the fourth Thursday in November. Now widely recognized as the official kickoff to the holiday season, the first parade was actually meant to honor the expansion of Macy’s flagship store in New York City, according to Mental Floss.

Originally called the “Macy’s Christmas Parade,” it featured floats pulled by horses, professional entertainers, and Macy’s employees. But the most memorable detail was the Central Park Zoo animals: Bears, elephants, and donkeys walked the original route from 145th Street and Covent Avenue to 34th Street (a.k.a. Herald Square).

As for the grand finale, Santa Claus made an appearance, followed by the unveiling of Macy’s Christmas window displays. The tradition continued to gain popularity, causing the parade to be broadcast over the radio for the first time in 1932 and televised in 1952.

Will there be new balloons at the 2021 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade?

So far, six new balloons have been announced for this year’s event. A 41-foot Funko Pop!-inspired balloon featuring The Mandalorian‘s Grog (a.k.a Baby Yoda) will make its debut at the 2021 parade.

“Group has become a global phenomenon, captivating fans of all ages with his charm, humor, and loyalty, as seen in The Mandalorian on Disney+,” Paul Southern, Senior Vice President, Franchise & Licensing, Lucasfilm and National Geographic, Disney Consumer Products, Games and Publishing said in a previous statement.

“This fall, fans will be able to see Grogu reimagined in a size befitting his impact in the Star Wars galaxy and pop culture, as well as enjoy a new sampling of Grogu-inspired products in celebration of this momentous occasion.”

Other new balloons debuting in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for 2021 include scientist Ada from the Netflix series Ada Twist, Scientist (based on the beloved kids’ book of the same name), Tiptoe the reindeer, who is the star of Macy’s holiday campaign, and Toni, Macy’s bandleader bear named after parade pioneer Tony Sarg (who created the parade’s first-ever helium balloons back in 1927!).

Astronaut Snoopy, Greg Heffley from Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Paw Patrol‘s Chase, Spongebob Squarepants & Gary, the Boss Baby, Papa Smurf, and Sonic the Hedgehog will be among the returning balloons.
