Let’s take a look at some of the criticism Lil Nas X faced here, and how he fired back.

The performance that struck a lot of nerves

Lil Nas X has been quite a controversial figure in the music world these past years, but is he actually doing anything wrong other than showing off his pride for being gay? While throughout the years, many haters have criticized him since the star shocked the world by coming out as queer, and have talked down on his songs, music videos, and more. Now, the star is once again making headlines from his BET Awards performance.

On Sunday night, millions of people were watching the BET Awards on their TV screens at home when Lil Nas X came on to perform his new singles. During the final weekend of Pride month, the rapper got on stage to perform an epic performance of his hit song called “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)”, and at the very end of the song, the star passionately kissed one of his male back-up dancers.

While for the most part, the fiery kiss was met with tons of praise from fans of the star and the internet alike, and even from Diddy himself, this performance was also scorned by a lot of folks who insisted that Lil Nas X is showing off too much of his gay lifestyle. For starters, “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” is a song that’s literally about the star’s gay lifestyle, so what did people expect? However, the star had no fear of firing back.

The pop star’s response

If you’re a fan of Lil Nas X, then we’re sure you all know he’s not one to hold back, especially on Twitter. After his performance, Lil Nas X got on Twitter to respond to all of those haters who had lots to say about how his music is apparently pushing too much of the gay lifestyle. The star tweeted: “y’all hate yourselves so much. y’all live your lives trying your best to appease straight ppl”.

“y’all are uncomfortable with what i do because y’all are afraid they will be uncomfortable with you. work on yourselves. i love who i am and whatever i decide to do. get there”, he added in response to a video of another gay person bashing Lil Nas X for his performance.

The star also added: “we are 4 months in and people are still acting surprised that i am being gay and sexual in performances of a song about gay and sexual sh*t”, and later joked: “like the song is literally about gay sex what y’all want me to do play the piano while baking a cake?”

He also admitted: “You’re right i am insecure about my sexuality. i still have a long way to go. I’ve never denied that. when you’re conditioned by society to hate yourself your entire life it takes a lot of unlearning. which is exactly why i do what i do”.

The star also wrote: “it took me a lot of time to mentally prepare for this performance. while on stage i was trembling knowing that i was performing something like that in front of my straight peers. even during the performance i was having a hard time calming my nerves. thank you guys for the love”.

Lil Nas X came out as gay back in 2019, and is a winner of two Grammys, and has never been one to keep quiet on expressing his sexuality. While the music video for his single “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” was met with some harsh criticism for again its open depiction of gayness along with its biblical references, the song was still met with lots of love and has since spent a fifth week topping the Billboard Global 200 singles chart.
