Is this wrestler in everything? Watch these movies with John Cena

John Cena shocked the WWE Universe last night by making a surprise comeback. The sixteen-time world champion stole the show from Roman Reigns who just defended the Universal Title at Money in the Bank. John Cena’s appearance likely portends a marquee match for the belt at Summerslam.

John Cena’s return also serves as marketing for his latest movies. Few movie stars are having as hot a summer as John Cena, and the latest entry in the Fast and Furious franchise, F9: The Fast Saga, saw Cena star as Vin Diesel’s villainous brother. The movie was a box office smash. Though you can’t see him, you should definitely check out his movies.

The Suicide Squad

The next John Cena movie may be one of the biggest movies of the summer. The Suicide Squad is directed by Guardians of the Galaxy’s James Gunn. This standalone sequel features an ensemble cast that includes Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, Viola Davis, Sylvester Stallone, among others.

John Cena will play The Peacemaker, a ruthless killer who uses violence to achieve his ultimate goal of peace. The film is due to be released in theaters on August 5th. It will be available to stream the next day on HBO Max. A series with Cena’s character, entitled Peacemaker, will also be available on the streaming service.

F9: The Fast Saga

F9: The Fast Saga features the biggest role of Cena’s career in movies. The movies have collectively generated billions of dollars. The Fast & Furious franchise is the seventh highest grossing series of all time.

F9 was one of the biggest movies of the summer with a fantastic cast of stars like Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Helen Mirren, and Kurt Russell. F9 also brings the return of director Justin Lin. Lin previously directed the fourth, fifth, and sixth entries of the increasingly ridiculous franchise.

John Cena plays Dominic Toretto’s brother Jakob Toretto. Jakob is an assassin, thief, and racecar driver who threatens the world as well as Dom’s new found family.

Trainwreck

While John Cena has appeared in many high profile action movies his best performance may have come in a comedy. The 2015 film Trainwreck stars Amy Schumer as a hard partying professional woman who avoids commitment. Her resolve is tested when she meets Dr. Aaron Conners, played by Bill Hader.

The comedy features a fantastic supporting cast that includes Colin Quinn, Brie Larson, Tilda Swinton, Mike Birbiglia, and Lebron James. Despite this cast John Cena steals the show with his hilarious cameo as Schumer’s dimwitted ex-boyfriend.

Blockers

John Cena’s detour into comedic movies didn’t end with Trainwreck. In 2018, he starred in the sex comedy film Blockers opposite Ike Barinholtz and Leslie Mann. The film is sort of a throwback to the crude sex comedies of the 90s. Blockers ends up being a sweeter & more empathetic movie than many of its predecessors.

John Cena plays a clueless & overprotective father looking to keep his teenage daughter from having sex on prom night. Cena does a great job keeping up with some top notch comedic actors.

The Marine

Though many already knew John Cena from his wrestling career, he wasn’t a household name like some other WWE Superstars. With The Marine, many were introduced to John Cena. The movie was produced by WWE Studios which also produced several early Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson movies.

The Marine was savaged by critics, but it retains a cult following. The role of the antagonist Rome was originally written for Al Pacino. Pacino turned it down because he was not offered enough money. The Marine is a schlocky actioner that is light on plot but heavy on ammunition. The film has spawned several direct-to-video sequels starring other WWE superstars like Ted DiBiase Jr. and Mike “The Miz” Mizanin.
