Bingewatch these HBO shows now ‘Game of Thrones’ is over

Are you so over 2018 already? Are you ready to fuggedabout your shitty life problems, forget about those boring adult things you’re meant to do (yawn), and sink your teeth into some serious bingewatching? Thought so! That’s where FD comes in – we like to keep you informed of all the best TV out there, and today is no different.

HBO has been the birthplace of many incredible shows and they’ve got some absolute treats, some new and some returning. Here’s a roundup of the most anticipated shows HBO released in 2018.

Westworld (season 2)

OMG! The second series of Westworld is out this Spring – HBO’s most important drama series that doesn’t have any dragons . . . yet. But who knows what’s in store for its return following the giant cliffhanger finale from season one? The sci-fi / Western / thriller was full of twists and turns in every episode – hopefully season two delivers the same.

Divorce (season 2)

Okay, the first season might have gotten a mixed reception, but the show itself is based on a promising premise – a black comedy starring Sarah Jessica Parker & Thomas Haden Church as a couple going through a very lengthy marriage breakup. And season two has even more promise thanks to its new showrunner, Jenny Bicks of Sex and the City. Let’s hope she manages to rekindle the love between audiences and the show – no one likes a messy divorce.

Here and Now

From Six Feet Under creator Alan Ball comes Here and Now, the “woke” series centering around two parents and their children, one biological and the other adopted from Vietnam, Liberia, and Colombia. Apparently it’s a “provocative and darkly comic meditation on the disparate forces polarizing present-day American culture”. If it’s anywhere near as addictive as Ball’s previous shows, we’re in!

Silicon Valley (season 5)

With leading man T.J. Miller having exited the series it’ll be interesting to see how this season of the popular comedy pans out. But alas, the show must go on, and we do still have the rest of the cast on board including Kumail Nanjiani and Thomas Middleditch. Also, Mike Judge is nothing if not inventive – hopefully he brings something fresh & new to the table.

Room 104 (season 2)

Mark and Jay Duplass are back with the second installment of their very experimental anthology series, a low-budget comedy set in a single room of a motel, telling different stories of the assorted guests who pass through. Book your tickets guys – we’re in for some sleepless nights!

Insecure (season 3)

Insecure is back for its eagerly anticipated third season, based partially on Issa Rae‘s widely lauded web series Awkward Black Girl. The story follows two best friends who deal with their own real-life flaws & insecurities as they cope and struggle with an endless series of uncomfortable everyday experiences. We’re stoked about the return of Issa & Molly, and you should be too!

Watchmen

With The Leftovers having wrapped its final season to wild critical acclaim, Damon Lindelof is sticking around at HBO to develop a Watchmen TV series rumored to be out at the end of this year. Reactions to the film of the same name were divisive, so it was inevitable another adaptation would follow. Let’s hope Lindelof does the story justice, and with The Leftovers being hailed “one of the best TV shows ever made”, the outlook is pretty dang good.

Barry

Bill Hader’s returning to the small screen with a comedy series based on a hit man from the Midwest who moves to Los Angeles and gets caught up in the city’s theatre arts scene. We all know Hader can bring the funny, but with Barry, the dark sides evident in the trailer should provide the comedian an opportunity to show off new facets in his acting chops.

Chernobyl

This five-part series tells the story of Soviet Union scientist Valery Legasov, sent to investigate the 1986 Chernobyl disaster considered one of the biggest environmental catastrophes in history. With Craig Mazin on board as writer and Johan Renck as director, this historical drama is definitely one to watch in 2018.

Sharp Objects

You should never run with sharp objects, but what you should do is check out this new series based on the novel by Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn, following a crime reporter fresh out of a psychiatric hospital who investigates the murder of two girls. Sounds tense, right? Oh yeah, and the whole series is being directed by Jean-Marc Vallee, whom you’ll know from Big Little Lies.

Veep (season 7)

The final season. It just sounds so . . . final. No one wants to see Veep end, but David Mandel & Co. have a chance to go out with a bang. With its lead Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Seinfeld) set to astound once again for the final season, there’s a lot to look forward to – especially when politicians are in need of a satirical grilling more than ever!

Succession

Coming from producers Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, Succession tells the story of the Roy family and their media empire, starring Brian Cox (Troy) as Logan Roy. With creator Jesse Armstrong behind the project, this could be a great show to take an interest in this year – after all, he did co-create Peep Show!
