‘Game of Thrones’: The hottest sex scenes featuring Emilia Clarke
Game of Thrones achieved something very few series manage to: it brought to life the dragons & ice monsters from George R.R. Martin’s eponymous book series & didn’t disappoint the readers & viewers. That is until the finale brought it all down. Nevertheless, Game of Thrones raised the question of “how much is too much?” & answered it by being completely unhinged when it came to sex scenes, nudity, etc.
One of the most remarkable characters was Daenerys – played by Elimia Clarke – whose character development chart is a steep curve. She came into her own through her relationships & her ambitions. All of this was peppered with some of the steamiest, most controversial sex scenes you’ve ever seen on your television screens. Here’s a quick round-up.
The experiment with comfort
Clarke’s character, Daenerys, didn’t have it easy when it comes to her sex life. Glimpses had shown us she was being objectified by her brother before she was married off to Khal Drogo. And then, there were copious amounts of sex & nudity – and not always pleasing to the eye.
Clarke shared on Dax Shepard’s podcast Armchair Expert, “I’d come fresh from drama school and I approached it as a job: if it’s in the script then it’s clearly needed. This is what this is and I’m going to make sense of it and that’s what I’m going to do and everything’s going to be cool.”
She added, “I’ve never been on a film set like this before. I’d been on a film set twice before then, and I’m now on a film set completely naked with all of these people, and I don’t know what I’m meant to do, and I don’t know what’s expected of me, and I don’t know what you want, and I don’t know what I want.”
The marital grey-area
What helped Clarke was having the compassionate Jason Momoa as her co-star. The first episode of the series portrayed one of the most uncomfortable sex scenes ever – Khal Drogo rapes Daenerys on their wedding night. He is completely mechanical about it, giving not another look to the Khaleesi, who is evidently terrified & on the verge of tears.
There’s another uncomfortable sex scene where Drogo forced himself on her & Daenerys has no choice but to stare at her three dragon eggs until it’s over.
Not everyone’s happy about these scenes. Even now, actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau – who played Jamie Lannister – called the scene out, “For Emilia to play that in series one was really tough and degrading, because what that character goes through is horrific. She’s sold to a guy who rapes her, but her way of getting through that is a massive journey, right?”
The marital turning point
After these bitter sexual escapades, she finally learns to take control. Her handmaid teaches her the ropes of seduction & the Khaleesi manages to have sex with Khal Drogo as his equal.
The one that came after: Daenerys with Daario
“These are my private quarters. If I want you here, I’ll summon you.” Dany wasn’t mincing her words, only adding to the build-up of sexual chemistry between her & Daario Naharis. Dany is still her controlling self – ordering Daario to take off his clothes in what sounds borderline pornographic – and that adds to the heat, even though we see no actual sex.
The forbidden sex
And finally, the scene that was a matter of fiery discussions around the show: the incestuous sex scene between Dany & Jon Snow, who didn’t know at the time that he’s having sex with his aunt. It’s come to be known as one of television’s most shocking sex scenes.
