CBD is growing more and more popular. Find out whether there's such a thing as a CBD overdose here.

Is There a Thing Like CBD Overdose?

Addiction and substance abuse are a matter of serious discussion. Thus, when you are taking a drug or medicine, then it is important to be informed about its ideal dosage. In case of overdose of certain drugs or medicines, the end result can be fatal. Thus, learning about the quality and quantity of drugs, even medicinal ones, before their consumption is crucial.

Talking about medicinal values, CBD is one cannabis product known for the same. It is recognized for having a number of therapeutic qualities. It is an anti-inflammatory compound and also helps in dealing with anxiety, depression, pains and many other health conditions. Thus, it has become quite normal for people to consume CBD, even without doctor’s consultation, however, it is advised to do so, in any case.

Despite its healing traits, the research and studies on CBD are still in fancy, and this leads many people to wonder, if one can overdose on CBD? If you are wondering the same as well, then this article will definitely help you get to the bottom of it.

Where does CBD come from?

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a natural compound found in the cannabis plant. However, unlike marijuana and other cannabis products, it doesn’t produce the ‘high’ or get you stoned. Why?

According to Ministry of Hemp, CBD products contain none or less than 0.3% of tetrahydrocannabinol or THC—the compound primarily responsible for getting you high. Since the amount of THC in CBD is not adequate to intoxicate a person, CBD is known to be a non-psychoactive substance.

This also means that CBD is a non-controlled substance in the US and as per the Farm Bill of 2018, is now legal in all the 50 states. Nevertheless, it is recommended to check with your local laws before buying the best CBD oil for yourself.

Can you develop a tolerance to CBD?

In order to build a tolerance, the product has to be addictive in nature. The products that can lead to tolerance are rich in THC- the high producing agent. CBD, on the other hand, is known for not containing any or nil amount of THC, which is reason enough to believe that CBD cannot build a tolerance in people. Plus, it is a natural product and cannot create any side effects either.

Another reason is that when CBD is consumed, it doesn’t bind itself with the cannabinoids with the body, as is the case with other cannabis products and popular drugs. It simply engages itself with cannabinoids in such a way that they boost their ability to produce more, in a natural way. This, in fact, results in ‘reverse tolerance,’ which means that the body continues to function without CBD the way it should with CBD intake. Thus, with time, even if you stop taking CBD, the body will respond as if you still are. Thus, there is not a chance that one can develop a tolerance to CBD.

Can you overdose on CBD?

According to a study published in Current Drug Safety in 2011, one will have to ingest more than 20,000 mg of CBD oil in a very short amount of time to become eligible for CBD overdose. Since time immemorial, people have been consuming CBD for industrial, medical, and spiritual reasons, and there hasn’t been a single fatal case of the same. In fact, research has accepted that there is yet to be a CBD case of deadly overdose in the world.

So, what does it take to have a CBD overdose? The research and studies have shown that there are nil chances of anyone having an overdose on CBD. Thus, the simple answer to the question is that no, you cannot overdose on CBD.

However, this doesn’t mean that more consumption is better. In fact, an ideal dosage of CBD is a small dosage. It is also recommended by the experts to begin the same with small dosage and accordingly increase the same with time, if needed. Be assured that CBD, in most cases, is absolutely safe to consume.

What is the right amount of CBD consumption?

There is no ideal dosage of CBD consumption, not yet. The Food and Drug Administration hasn’t regulated the same currently. However, it is always recommended to start with the minimum CBD dosage and once your symptoms start alleviating at a certain dosage, stick on it. After a month, start decreasing the dosage and notice if you are getting the same result at that dosage or not. If it does, then you have developed reverse tolerance for CBD, and it’s a good thing!

The right CBD dosage varies from person-to-person, depending on their body type, weight, gender, height, etc. As per the studies, CBD dosage ranges from 1 mg to 1500 mg per day and there hasn’t been a single case of CBD overdose in history.

Conclusion

If you are a beginner, then you should be assured that there is no such thing like CBD overdose. If you are a regular consumer of CBD, then you would know this already. Thus, the only things you should keep in mind at the time of purchasing your CBD products is that they should be manufactured and sold by a reputable company, which has acquired the certificate of analysis and is third-party lab tested. Also, do not forget to check the volume of THC in the product. Once everything is checked, decide on the dosage with the help of a CBD expert or medical practitioner, and go ahead with the treatment.
