All about the film
Antebellum comes from producers of Get Out with debut directors Gerard Bush & Christopher Renz at the helm. This historical horror movie will thrust you into a world drenched in violence & prejudice. Antebellum’s story revolves around a modern-day Black woman named Veronica Henley who finds herself trapped in Civil War-era America. There, she’s forced to live as a slave in the heart of Louisiana. Henley sets out on a mission to free herself & others and take them back to the modern period.
Antebellum stars Janelle Monáe as the lead protagonist who plays both in the present-day as Veronica and 19th-century enslaved woman Eden. Others in the cast include Gabourey Sidibe as the protagonist’s best friend, Marque Richardson as the lead’s husband, Jack Huston as a plantation owner, Eric Lange as a confederate senator, and Jena Malone as the mistress of the plantation.
What are critics saying?
Antebellum got a mishmash of reviews with some praising the satire behind the movie and others saying that the movie did not live up to its hype.
According to Rolling Stone, “The movie isn’t without its climactic satisfaction: It offers black audiences the escape hatch of reciprocal violence that revenge narratives deploy as a rule”.
“But even this gets married a little when the complex pleasure of vengeance is doled out in a conclusory overdose of beauteous empowerment imagery” the website added. Antebellum currently sits at 28% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer.
Where can you watch Antebellum?
In light of coronavirus safety protocols, Antebellum was released on premium video-on-demand platforms on September 18th. The movie received strong initial response and became the number 1 rented film on FandangoNow & Apple TV in its debut week, as reported by IndieWire.
Antebellum is available to stream on a myriad of streaming services including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, Fandango Now, Vudu, and YouTube, among others. The prices varies depending on the options but on most platforms, Antebellum will cost $5.99 to rent and $19.99 to buy on demand.
